About Andrew Doyle, Convict "Rolla" 1803
In the preface to his definitive work "The Hawkesbury Doyles" (pub. Illawarra Historical Publications, Wollongong 1992), Peter Doyle (q.v.) states "There seems to be no basis for the claim that the family were connected to the well known family of Hastings Doyle ...... I am afraid this was due to wishful thinking on the part of a member of the family. At no time did Andrew, or his grandson Andrew, ever sign as Andrew Hastings Doyle". For this reason the insertion of "Hastings" into Andrew Doyle's name as practiced by the website 'Australian Royalty' has not been followed in this profile.
The Doyle burial tomb was moved from Ulitedinburra Lodge, Lower Portland to St Matthews Cemetery, Windsor when the family property was sold in 1910.
From : Dictionary of Australian Artists" by Joan Kerr pub. Power Institute of Fine Arts, Sydney Univ. 1984 "DOYLE, Andrew (1774-1841) natural history artist and landowner, was exiled for life after the uprisings of 1798 annd 1801. He reached Sydney abord the Rollo on 12 May 1803, accompanied by his wife Sofia nee Norris and three children who travelled as free immigrants. Although ostensibly a convict, Doyle purchased a house in the Rocks area soon after arrival and in the following year was assigned as a servant to Sophia's farm... (in the) Toongabbie (district). He later acquired land himself near Lower Portland on the Hawkesbury River and around 1809 built a house, Ulitedinburra Lodge. In 1822 Doyle petitioned Governor Brisbane for a land grant of 300 acres and prepared a "Memorial" to substantiate his claim. The document states that upon arrival in Sydney, the "Memorialist" was appointed to draw in water colours two collections of the Natural Shrubs of this colony by Governor King for Sir Joseph Banks". Nothing is known of the fate of these works. However the Mitchell Library owns two watercolours 'Rock Lily' and 'Woody Pear' which were executed at his Hawkesbury Residence. It is also recorded that he painted several yards of ribbon with wildflowers as a gift for Mrs King, the governor's wife."
