About Amos Dicken

As per Darlene Orts: "Amos Dicken, born 1744 died 1823. Revolutionary War Service (DAR Ancestor # A033590); will probated in Southampton Township, Bedford County, PA on April 7, 1823)

1777-1778 he enlisted in Capt. John Miller's Company G, Third compay, 6th Regiment. He enlisted again in 1782 in the same company, which was formed at Shrewbury Township, York County, PA, with a notation that they came from Cumberland Valley, Bedford County, PA. Assumed brothers THOMAS DICKEN (DAR Ancestor # A33604) and JOHN DICKEN, were also on the musterroll, now on dispaly at the York Historical Museum at York, PA. Amos, Thomas, and John were neighbors in Cumberland Valley Township and took up land together. The name in the PA archives is spelled DICKIN but they signed in asd DICKEN.

April 20, 1779 Amos Dicken purchased 110 acres of land on the north branch of the Patomac River, Hampshire County, VA (now West Virginia). Residence was given as Washinton County, MD at the time of purchase. There is no record of Amos other than in the Hampshire County Court House.

In 1783 Amos Dicken paid tax on 100 acres, 2 horses, 3 couws, and 2 sheep in Cumberland Valley Township.

May 10, 1786 Amos Dicken and his son Stephen filed on 200 acres known as "Friendship" Cumberland Valley Township.

In 1806 he recieved appointment as Justice of the Peace in Cumberland Valley Township.

The 1810 and 1820 cencus shows him in Southampton Township, Bedford County. During this time there are numerous land transactions.

The AMOS DICKEN "WILL" was probated on April 7, 1823 at Bedford County Court House, with his sons Stephen and Isaac adminitrators.

In the Name of God Amen I AMOS DICKEN of Southampton Township Bedford County and State of Pennsylvania Farmer being very sick and weak in body but of sound mind memory and understanding (Blessed be God for the same) and considering the uncertainty of this transitory life do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and for following to wit- Principally and first of all I commend my immortal soul into the hands of God who gave it and my body to the earth to be buried in a decent and Christian like manner at the discretion of my executors herein after named; and as to such worldly Estate where with it hath pleased God to Bless me in this life I give and dispose of the forms in the following manner to wit- First it is my will and I do order that all my just debts and funeral expenses be duly paid and satisfied as soon as conveniently can be after my decease. Item I give and bequeath unto my dear wife DORCAS DICKEN all my real and personal estate during her natural life and after her decease then I give and devise whatever may remain of my said estate to be equally divided among my five sons STEPHEN DICKEN, ISAAC DICKEN, JESSE DICKEN, JONATHAN DICKEN and AMOS DICKEN my said sons first paying thereout unto each of my daughters herein after named- Item I give and bequeath after the decease of my said wife unto my daughter TAMOR WIGFIELD one hundred dollars. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter MARY PERDEW one hundred dollars. Item I give and bequeath to my daughter ELIZABETH STEWART one hundred dollars. Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter RUTH DICKEN one hundred dollars but if in case my said daughter RUTH should decease unmarried and without issue. Item I do order and direct that her legacy or share shall go and be part of the residue of my estate. And lastly, I nominate constitute and appoint my sons STEPHEN DICKEN and ISAAC DICKEN of the above named Township, County, and State to be the executors of this my will hereby revoking all other wills legacies and bequests by me heretofore made and declaring this and no other to be my last will and Testament. In witness where of I have hereunto set my hand and seal the 13th day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twelve-
