Alvin Eugene Sturdevant

Alvin "Babe" Eugene Sturdevant was born Nov. 30, 1921, in Farmington, to Eugene and Lucy Dubray Sturdevant. He died on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2015, in the city of his birth. Babe was a miner in the Silverton, Colo., area when World War II began and was called up to the U.S. Army. He was then recalled to the mines and finally transferred to the U.S. Navy, where he served on board the aircraft carrier USS Shangri La CV-38. After the war, he returned to Silverton but was often in Farmington with his family. On Nov. 10, 1948, he married Augusta (Gussie) Ann Alexander in Aztec. They had one son, Gary Eugene. Babe had many jobs during his long life, including hard rock miner, tavern owner, contractor and foreman at the San Juan Power Plant. He was well loved by family and friends who knew him as a kind trickster. It was normal to find rocks, bolts and other odd objects in purses after he had been around.

Babe was preceded in death by his wife, Gussie Sturdevant, seven brothers and three sisters. His brothers are James, Walter, Charles, Bob, Preston, Allie and Frank. His sisters are Evelyn Horn, Charlene Powell and Ruth Erickson. He is survived by one sister, Marian Benton; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. We will all miss him greatly.

Services for Alvin will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 12 at the Brewer, Lee and Larkin Funeral Home in Farmington. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, 1605 N. Dustin Ave. in Farmington.
