• .... Sir William Hoo of Hastings had served three sovereigns in ambassadorial, diplomatic, and other distinguished ways during forty years. He died Lord Hoo and Hastings, 22d November 1410, aged 75. His first wife was Alice de St. Omer, daughter and coheiress of Nicolas, Lord de Malmaynes, of the baronial Kent family who came with the Conqueror, and who were heired chiefly by the Crevequeres, barons of Chatham and Leeds Castle. Sir William Hoo and Alice de St. Omer had Thomas, who succeed his father, and in more ways than one. .... In the roll of the knights of the garter, Sir Thomas Hoo, lord Hoo and Hastings, is entered as elected in 1445, and these services are the explanation of his K.G. In 1460 William, lord Hastings, had K.G. Sir Thomas had two brothers, John and William, and one sister, 'Margaret, who married the wealthy Thomas St. Clere, from which marriage the family of Gage is descended.' The antiquary adds, 'The descendants of the daughter Margaret were ultimately the heirs of Thomas Hoo who died in 1486.' This was the last of the line. We have nothing to relate of the next heir, Sir Thomas; but his son William, marrying Alice, daughter and co-heiress of Thomas de St. Omer, became Lord of Hoo, of Offley, of Monkbarton in Norfolk, and other manors, and was a man of considerable importance during the reigns of Edward III., Richard II., and Henry IV. .... etc.

• Sir Thomas Hoo died 23rd August, 1420, leaving two sons by different wives, both named Thomas, .... an indisputable fact, as appears by the testament of the elder brother, which commences thus; " I, Thomas Hoo, Knight, Lord of Hoo and Hastings, the xij. daye of February the yere of King Henry the sixt the xxxiij., .... , he proceeds to make bequests, to "my brother Thomas and his eyrys," and also leaves his daughters to be "rulyed, gouvernyd, and maryed, by the discecion of my wyffe, and Thomas Hoo my brother." .... etc.

• He died February 3, 1455, the day after the date of his will. He was twice married; by his first wife he had one daughter named Anne, who married during her father's lifetime, Sir Geoffrey Bulleyne, Knight, ancestor of Queen Elizabeth. By his second wife he had three daughters, the eldest called Anna in some manuscripts—but by Dugdale, Jane—was aged seven at her father's death. She married Sir Roger Copley of Roughey. The names of the others were Eleanor and Elizabeth. Eleanor married first Thomas Etchingham, and then Sir James Carew of Beddington. Elizabeth married Sir Thomas Massingberg, citizen and mercer of London, and afterwards John Devenish of Hellingly.

His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of William Etchingham; he married early, Alice, daughter of Walter Urrey of Rusper. • Thomas St Clere (28 October 1401 – 1435) was a son of Sir Philip St Clere of Penshurst Place. He was a major landowner whose estates included property in eight English counties.
• Thomas was the younger son of Sir Philip St Clere and his wife Margaret de Loveyne. At an enquiry held on 6 March 1423/4 to assess whether Thomas had reached the age of majority, a total of twelve witnesses testified that he had been born at East Grinstead on 28 October 1401 and baptised at the church there on the same day.[1] Thomas’ parents died during his childhood and their property was inherited by their oldest son, John St Clere. However, John in turn died on 2 November 1418, at which stage his younger brother Thomas became his heir. The extensive range of properties that Thomas inherited were situated in a total of eight counties – Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Suffolk and Surrey.[2]
• Thomas St Clere married Margaret, daughter of Sir William Hoo and his wife Alice St Omer. Thomas was still a minor in the wardship of Henry V at the time of his marriage but the necessary licence had not obtained from the King. On 5 February 1422/3, a pardon was granted to Sir John Pelham who had arranged the marriage.[3] The record of this pardon states that John had been ordered to have Thomas unmarried before the King in Chancery at a certain day but, nevertheless, John caused Thomas to be married in the meantime; this suggests that the marriage probably took place fairly soon before the pardon was granted, probably in 1422. On 8 February 1423/4, Thomas paid £200 to Henry VI in order to be forgiven for his own involvement in the irregularity.[4]
