About Alice Cotton, of Landwade
Origins
From " The Ancestry of Thomas Bradbury and his Wife, Mary (Perkins) Bradbury of Salisbury, MA," pp. 207-224.
John Abbot made his will on June 19,1443 (VERY LONG!). In it he disposed of his real estate and provided for a chantry to be established in the Farthinhoe Church and services be held there for his soul and the souls of his parents, etc. On Feb. 27,1443/4 he made his testament, dying shortly after this. The will was proved on March 5,1443/4. From his will we know that he originally came from Farthinghoe to London where he was a member of the church of Saint Lawrence in Old Jewry. He was probably buried in the chancel there as he requested. This ancient church was burned in the fire of 1666. He left a widow, Agnes, and two married daughters: Alice, wife of William Cotton; and Elizabeth, wife of Walter Mauntell. No sons are named. The will of John Fray (1449/50) who was recorder of the City of London, left to the Wardens and Commonalty of the craft of mercery in London, tenements held by him in trust, in Cattonlane, parish of Saint Lawrence in Jewry, charged with the maintenance of a chantry in the church of Farnyngo, county Northampton, for the souls of John Abbot and others. (Court of Hustings Wills II:574). In a deed of 1510 there is a reference to a tenement in the parish of Saint Katherine colman, formerly of John Abbot, mercer (Ancient Deed A 12313).
