Death 1690
Charles Needham and Bridget Drury had no daughter Alice. There is no room between their documented six children (one died in infancy) for another child (they were married Feb. 27 1654/1655—perhaps 1654, as their second child Robert was baptized in 1655), and Charles was in prison toward the end of their marriage (imprisoned August, 1659, died in prison 1660). Some would argue she was stricken from the will for eloping to America, but she would have been a very little girl at the time of Charles’s death. Only one daughter, Mary, is mentioned in the administration of the estate. She died in England.
Charles’ father Robert appears to have had 2 children with his first wife and 12 with his second. While there is room in the second marriage for another child, the dates are off. Robert’s second marriage to Eleanor Dutton occurred about 1623. It was Eleanor’s second marriage as well--she was born c1596. Eleanor Needham seems too old to be Alice’s mother. I suppose Robert could have had a child out of wedlock late in life, but since he died 9/12/1653 and Alice Bryan presumably had eldest child Needham Bryan in 1690, let’s say for the sake of argument that Alice was born posthumously in 1654, making her 36 at the birth of her oldest child. That’s a stretch, and if she were illegitimate, Alice would be no “Lady Alice” anyhow.
This website was created by a proven Needham descendant. Some of the dates are documented, but unfortunately not all of them. http://www.members.shaw.ca/jmream/needham.html [note: dead link]
This site references three different peerage references—not primary sources, but better than nothing. http://www.thepeerage.com/p14043.htm#i140421

If we’ve ruled out both Charles and Robert, that leaves us at square one with our Alice. Some suspect the Needham connection was through either William or Alice’s maternal grandmother instead, which might be a good working theory for research, but isn’t enough to prove a line of descent. Besides, there were other Needhams in Virginia we haven’t ruled out, not to mention men from other families who had Needham as a first name.
The alternative MacLand descent is also problematic. William Bryan is not mentioned in John MacLand’s will fragment (daughter Alice Bryant is mentioned, but her husband is not named) and his grandson “Needham” is thought by many to be a transcription error of “Woodham.” Honestly, I put John MacLand there to try to keep the Needhams from being merged onto my tree (no offense!!).
Here are some valid objections to our using the MacLand will fragment as documentation: http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/needham/676/
(By the way, carsonjohnson.com is now a dead link. The document has been preserved in the sources, anyway, but it includes no primary documentation and should not be considered as good source material. Not that any of us can show primary documentation for the whole family tree, but when you’re talking about people in the nobility, the burden of proof should be higher.)
