The liferent of the barony of Simprin was settled by Sir William upon his wife Helen, fifth daughter of the fourth Lord Elphinstone, by his wife Helen, eldest daughter of the sixth Lord Livingstone.

Alexander, fourth Lord Elphinstone, was born 28 May 1552. Before he was twenty-five, in 1577, his father, ' understanding his own inability to govern his living, entertain his house and family, bring up his bairns,' etc., made over to him his whole estates. He was made one of the ' ordinar gentlemen ' of the King's Chamber 15 October 1580.
