Alan was a younger son of Thomas FitzGospatrick of Workington, Cumberland.[1][2][3][4][5]
He is called a "knight of Cumberland" in 1213-4. He acquired the lands of Camerton from brother Patrick de Curwen by 1236, and he was known as Alan de Camerton. [6]
Alan may have had a son Alan, who had a widow Mary who died in 1304.[1] There was also a John, son of Alan de Camerton, in a St. Bees charter and a John de Camerton in St. Bees charters ca. 1258-82.[7]
Research Notes
The father of Alan was previously changed from Thomas to Patrick de Curwen, but that change seems not to have been adequately supported by sources. A personal website of Terry Booth is said to supply sources for the father being Patrick, but that website is no longer online. All of the sources cited here call Alan the son of Thomas and brother of Patrick. Jackson in his first article does mistakenly refer to Alan as son of Patrick on p. 189, but his pedigree correctly shows him as son of Thomas. The books "Cumberland Families and Heraldry" and "History of the Ancient House of Curwen," cited in the posting by Dickinson are not available online and have not been consulted, but Roy Hudleston is considered a reliable source for Cumberland genealogy.
The identification of Alan de Camerton is somewhat complicated by the fact that Thomas FitzGospatrick had a brother named Alan. [2][3]He might possibly have also been called de Camerton in St. Bees charters or that might have been the younger Alan.[8]
