About Agnes Fitzgerald
Agnes was born on 18 Jun 1763, possibly in Virginia. She was supposedly a daughter of Garrett Fitzgerald, but there are no direct primary sources for her place of birth or the names of her parents. She married Aquilla Lane on 1 Feb 1780, and they had 13 children according to Agnes' Revolutionary War widow's pension application, which also listed her dates of birth and marriage. Agnes and Aquilla's first son was named Garrett, possibly after her father.
Indirect evidence that Garrett was Agnes' father comes from land records. Both Garrett Fitzgerald and Aquilla Lane were granted 100 acres of land each on the south side of the Holston River in Sullivan County, then part of North Carolina, on 24 Feb 1779. Then on 21 Oct 1783, Aquilla Lane was granted 100 acres and Garrett Fitzgerald was granted 600 acres, both in Greene County, North Carolina.
Agnes was still living on 1 Feb 1845 when she submitted her pension application in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Her date of death is not known, but on 29 Jan 1852, her youngest son, Thomas J. Lane, executed a power of attorney in which he stated "that his mother had died 'some 4 years since,'" putting her year of death at about 1848.
