About Adam Mott, of Portsmouth
Adam3 Mott, Sr. (John2, John1) was born Aug 12, 1596 in Cambridge, England, and died Aug 12, 1661 in Portsmouth, Newport Co, RI.
In the shipping list, Adam is stated to have come from Cambridge. He evidently belonged to the nearby Ezzes parish of Saffron Walden, where the surname occurs as far back as 1570 in the parish register. The following entries pertain to Adam of Portsmouth:
- Married 28 Oct. 1616, Adam Mott and Elizabeth Creel;
- Buried 18 June 1617, a man child of Adam Mott; and
- Baptized 6 Sept 1618, John son of Adam Mott.
- At the neighboring parish of Horseheath, co. Cambridge, Adam Mott and Sarah Lott were married 11 May 1635.
Brief Biography
- from SLOCUMS IN AMERICA, by Charles Slocum, page 41.
The surname Mott is found in the parish register of Saffron Waldon, county Essex, EN as early as 1570. Our Adam, born in Cambridgeshire, came to AM. in the Defence, which sailed from London on July 2, 1635, and arrived in Boston on October 8. He was then thirty-nine years old and was accompanied by his second wife, Sara Lott, his four children by his first wife (including Elizabeth) and his stepdaughter, Mary Lott. He brought with him "testimony from the Justice of the Pease, and minister in Cambridge, of his conformity to the orders of discipline of the Church of England." He was a tailor.
Perhaps his father, John Mott, was our first MA Mott ancestor. But whether he came before, with or after Adam is not known. The statement in the Portsmouth Town Records (p. 72) that on July 3, 1656, it was voted to provide for the support of "old John Mott," seems to be the only record of him in AM.
Adam became a freemen at Roxbury MA on May 25, 1635, and he and Sarah became members of John Eliot's church there. Soon they removed to Higham MA, where he was granted land. In 1638, however, he was admitted an inhabitant of Aquidneck RI and on June 23 he was granted a lot "on the west side of the spring" in Portsmouth.
On March 12, 1640, he was one of five men chosen to lay out the lands of Portsmouth, and on March 16, 1641, he became a freemen of the town. The records of the Town meeting of April 26, 1641, state that the Deputy Governor was to lend him one yearling goat. He was clerk of the town's military company in 1642, and on May 27, 1644, he was given an an addition to his lot.
He should not be confused with the Adam Mott who came to Newbury, MA and later migrated to Long Island.

comments
"Adam Mott born 1596 son of John Mott, went to MA on the DEFENCE. He later moved to RI when his father joined him They both seemed to have died in 1661. This Adam is the progenitor of the "RI and CT Motts"
"His cousin, Adam Mott born 1621 son of JAMES MOTT (brother of John) went to NY on the BEVIS in 1639. He lived on Long Island and is the progenitor of the "NY Motts"
"The father of James and John was JOHN Mott of Saffron Walden. It is very common to mix these two families and to get the Adams confused."

Between 1639 and 1656, there are about a dozen references in Portsmouth to a man referred to variously as "John Mott," "Goodman Mott" and "old John Mott." Two of these records show that this man was the father of Adam Mott. On 4 June 1649, "Adam Mott having offerred a cow forever and 5 bushels of corn by the year so long as the old man shall live, towards his maintenance that so he might be discharged from any further charge," the town arranged for further supplies to be turned over to William Baulstone for the support of the indigent man. On 3 July 1656, the town voted funds to "John Teft . to keep old John Mott this year for diet, lodging, washing and looking to beside the cow and the corn that the old man's son Adam is engaged to give."
