• John Whipple (c. 1617 - 1685)[2] was an early settler of Dorchester in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who later settled in Providence in the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, where the family became well established.
• The first mention of Whipple's name in colonial records was in October 1632 when he was ordered to pay a small fine to his master, Israel Stoughton, for wasting powder and shot.[2] In 1637 he received a grant of land in Dorchester, and in 1641 he and his wife joined the church there.[2] During the next 17 years, he raised a large family in Dorchester, where eight of his 11 children were baptized.[2] In 1658 he sold his homestead and lands in Dorchester and moved with his family to Providence, where he was received as a purchaser on 27 July 1659.[2]
• In February 1665 he was given a lot in a division of lands, and the following year took an oath of allegiance in Providence.[2] In 1666 he served as a deputy to the General Assembly, a position he held for seven of the next 11 years.[2] In 1669 and again in 1670 he was paid for allowing the Providence Town Council to meet at his house,[3] probably referring to his tavern for which he was later granted a license in 1674.[2] He held a number of positions in Providence, including treasurer in 1668, surveyor in 1670 and 1671, selectman in 1670 and 1674, and moderator in 1676.[4]
• The year 1675 brought the most devastating event to afflict Rhode Island for the entire colonial period when King Phillips War erupted, bringing the bulk of its destructive force on the Rhode Island colony. All of Warwick and Pawtuxet were destroyed, and much of Providence was as well. As the war wound down in 1676, Indian captives were given as slaves to those residents who remained during the war, and on 14 August 1676 Whipple was so entreated as being one of those "who staid and went not away."[2]
• Whipple wrote his will on 8 May 1682, and it was proved three years later on 27 May 1685. His wife had died in 1666, aged about 42,[1] and he and his wife were buried on their own land, but were later moved to the North Burial Ground after its opening in 1700.[2]
• With his wife Sarah, Whipple had 11 children, the first eight born in Dorchester, and the remainder born in Providence.[5] His oldest son, John, married first Mary Olney, the daughter of Thomas Olney and Mary Small, and secondly Rebecca Scott, the widow of John Scott (son of Richard Scott and Catharine Marbury).[2] Sarah married John Smith, Samuel married Mary Harris, and Eleazer married Alice Angell, the daughter of Thomas and Alice Angell.[6] Mary married Epentus Olney, the son of Thomas Olney and Mary Small, William's wife was named Mary, and Benjamin married Ruth Mathewson.[6] David married first Sarah Hearndon, and secondly Hannah Tower, and Abigail married first Stephen Dexter, the son of colonial President Gregory Dexter, and secondly William Hopkins, the son of Thomas Hopkins.[7] Whipple's tenth child, prominent merchant Joseph Whipple, married Alice Smith, and his youngest child, Jonathan, married first Margaret Angell, the daughter of Thomas Angell, and secondly a woman named Anne.[8]
• A grandson of Whipple, Joseph Whipple, Jr. became deputy governor of the colony, and a great grandson, Joseph Whipple, III, was also a deputy governor.[9] Another great grandson, Stephen Hopkins was a governor of the colony, Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, and signer of the Declaration of Independence.

• 1. Captain JOHN WHIPPLE, one of the early settlers at Providence, R. I., was born in England about 1616 or 1617, and died May 16, 1685. What part of England he came from is not known. History states that in 1630 about fifteen hundred persons landed in Boston from England. "Oct. 3, 1632, he was ordered to pay 3s. 4d. to his master, Israel Stoughton, for wasteful expenditure of powder and shot." As he was apprenticed to Stoughton, it is only fair to suppose that he came to this country with him. In 1637, he received a grant of land at Dorchester Neck. He married his wife, Sarah, at Dorchester about the year 1639-40, and they united with the church at Dorchester in 1641. He was a house-carpenter by trade, and owned a house and forty or fifty acres of land near Neponset village. He lived at Dorchester about eighteen years, and during that time there were born unto him six sons and two daughters.
• He sold his house and land to James Minot in 1658, and removed to Rhode Island, settling at Providence, with his family, he received appropriation July 29, 1659. He had two sons and one daughter born at Providence, making in all eleven children. In 1660, he received a grant of land in Louisquisset. He also owned land in several other places, as mentioned in his will. February 19, 1665, he had lot 45 in the division of lands. May 31, 1666, he took the oath of allegiance to King Charles II, as did also his eldest son John. .... etc.

• Captain Whipple lived in Providence about twenty-six years; during this period he experienced many hardships and privations, such as attend the first settlers of a new country; but among the many losses he had to meet, there could be none greater than the loss of his wife, who died in 1666, living with him only about seven years after they first came to Providence, and leaving in his care a family of several small children, the youngest an infant. He died May 16, 1685, and with his wife was buried in a garden-lot near his house. After several years, they with others of the family were reinterred at the North Burying Place.   • He lived in Providence until 1692, on the estate left him by his father, when he bought land in the ancient limits of Rehoboth, now Cumberland, R. I. Rev. William Blackstone, one of the earliest settlers of Rhode Island, erected his study on a hill, and called the place "Study Hill," which name it still bears. This "Hill" at his death fell to his only son John, who deeded it to David Whipple, This deed is now in possession of the Historical Society at Providence. David Whipple, at the time of his death, was an ensign. His will is dated March 24, 1709, and proved January 8, 171 1; his wife Hannah being the executrix. .... etc.

  • 11. X. JOSEPH, born in Providence. 1662; died in Providence, August 28, 1746, and was buried in the North Burying Place. He married, May 20, 1684, Alice, daughter of Edward and Auphillis (Angell) Smith, who was born in Providence in 1664, and died July 30, 1739. He, with his brother Jonathan, took the oath of allegiance to King Charles II, in May, 1682. He was a colonel of the Providence militia; was one of the town councilmen for twelve years, most of the time from 1715 to 1729; and representative to the general assembly for nineteen years, between 1698 and 1728. In 1723, he gave one hundred pounds toward building an Episcopal church on North Main Street, in Providence, it being the largest amount given by any one of those who contributed to its erection. He gave the use of a lot of land at the north end of Benefit Street to build a school-house on, and it was called "Whipple Hall."

• John Whipple was in Dorchester, Mass., as early as 1632, in service to Isreal Stoughton, carpenter. He received a grant of land at Worchester neck in 1637. He married his wife Sarah in Dorchester in 1639 or '40, They united with the church in Dorchester in 1641, He owned a house and forty or fifty acres of land near what is now called Neonset Village. In 1658 he sold his estate in Dorchester to James Minot and the same year, or the year following, removed to Providence, where he received an allotment of land July 29, 1659. He and his son John took the oath of allegiance in 1666. • Mrs. Sarah Whipple died in the year 1666, aged 42. Her husband died May 16, 1685, aged 68. His will was made May 8, 1685. He and his wife were first buried near his residence, but as this with other burial places were needed for public uses in the opening of Benefit Street, their remains were removed to the North Burial Ground, where their tombstones are to be seen.

• He became blind in his later years, as appears from the old council records in the proceedings relating to his will. He died December 10, 1700, and his wife presented a will of his that disinherited his only son John, but it was proved that he had stated that "he could not help doing as he had done, for he was now blind and he must do as other would have him," and expressed his desire not to disinherit his son but to help him if he could. The will was set aside because of undue influence on the part of his second wife.

• Thomas Hopkins married about 1648, his wife (according to Savage) being Elizabeth, daughter of William Arnold, and a sister of Gov. Benedict Arnold. He appears to have contributed from his talents to the public weal, having been deputy to the General Assembly from Providence for the years 1652, 1659, 1660, 1665, 1666 and 1667, and a member of the town council in 1667 and 1672. His children were William and Thomas.
• (II) Major William Hopkins, the eldest son of Thomas, was made a freeman of the Colony April 30, 1672. He married, about 1680, Abigail, widow of Stephen Dexter, and daughter of John and Sarah Whipple, early settlers of Providence. The Major as a man of marked ability, serving the Colony both in a civil and military capacity. He was also a noted surveyor of lands throughout the Colony. He died July 8, 1723, leaving a large property. He had but one son, William.
• (III) William Hopkins, the only son of Major William and Abigail Hopkins, died in Scituate, R. I., in 1738. He married, early in life, Ruth, daughter of Samuel and Plaine (Wickenden) Wilkinson, early settlers of Providence. Their children were; William, Stephen, John, Esek, Rufus, Hope, Samuel, Abigail and Susanna.
