The only thing so far about Geni that's excited me is one very large line with many allied families, that I finally found with he help of someone on Geni. This was my father's mother's side. Other then that there ain;t much that excits me.I like building my tree. really not that interest in so called relations that are so far off in right or left field, that in real life , they don't even count as real relatives. It interesting to see how things twist and turn and come back together again at me.

Amos KINSMAN Webster is my 7th cousin....son of Isaac Webster of Nova Scotia......I wonder how they, and why they migrated to your locale?

@Judith (Judy) You never know when one of these relatives "that are so far off in right or left field" may be able to provide that one piece of info that you have been searching for to fill in another branch of your tree or provide info you were unaware of!!! So don't discount their connections.

I really like the chain that shows how I am related to a person--have found that I have a lot of nobility & royalty way, way, way back in my tree & have connected with some really neat & often times helpful cousins!! I think it is really interesting to see how we are related. Thru Geni have had many "oooh, ooooh" moments when finding another ancestor!!!

Everyone is so helpful in Geni!!! So I would like to thank all who have helped me along the way both in finding more ancestors and in helping with "problems" that have come my way.

A lot of the links overseas are a result of still-to-be-discovered US profiles not yet entered....(the system wants to link you, so does what it can to do so)....and that is why everyone's tree (in as complete a form as possible) is needed......to bridge, even if a way's back, one family to another...

And you are absolutely correct....Patricia....the people on Geni are most helpful.....and not only Curators....there are many, many Pros and non-Pros that have given that vital piece of information to help more families make those connections than I can relate here.

I love Geni!!!! and am doing my best to enter those family members I know of into the system, including great (+) aunts & uncles, although I frequently don't have much info on them. Sometimes I do attempt to find info (dates) for them to make it easier to verify for others. I always put what I have found in their profiles. I am working on ALL of the branches on my mom's side of the family (some are to 5th ggparents, & some are much, much further back in time--so that is a lot of branches!!!). I usually focus on the direct line with more details in their "About" section & have learned how to get Geni to co-operate with me (or me with Geni???) to make their profiles easier to read with bullets rather than paragraphs--takes time, but they look so "pretty" when done!

Fay, you are correct, there are many curators, pros & non-pros that have provided assistance most graciously. We are one big family and that is what families are supposed to do--help one another.

I was responding to Judith's disparaging comments about very distant cousins. It bothered me that she didn't seem to appreciate them. One never knows where help will come from especially in finding or connecting to that ancestor you may not have realized you were looking for... or for someone to connect with you with that piece of info you have been searching for... Help may come from near or far!

I tend to get on my soap box when emailing cousins who are not in the Geni system in an attempt to get them to join. Can't say enough good things about this system! (Don't need to sell you on it though, do I???)

Have a Happy & safe Holiday

Patricia, I put these people in when I find them but they are not related enough to be really condiered relative. They are so far off that we could all marry each other. Not that we want to but we could. The best part of these profiles is to see how everyone comes full circle. And I beleive that's what I said. As far as getting family members to join , as I have said many times before, none of mine are interseted in joining. For the most part they have handed everything they have to me and basicly dropped the family tree in my lap. I think I have one on Geni and have tried to contact him via his mother but to no advail. Maybe I would feel the same way you do if I didn't already have most of my tree already and found most of it on my own, which the exception of French Candian side which two or three Canadians on here helped me out with

can somebody help me, i recently started my family tree and haven't merged nothing yet. in my tree there are four (no name) persons that i can't delete, i tried everything, removed names, other connections but still can't delete them.

Daniel - I have sent you a messsage

Daniel I have the same proble wwitn unk or no names and can't get mine out either.

Judith - they usually have 'phantom' relationships which you can remove

Patricia.....

Hi there cousin....pretty short route when you have the siblings....

Let me know if I can ever be of assistance.

Fay

Okay, people, let me tell you the three things that this merge has done that has really irritated me.

1. I can't see my full tree anymore. Previously, when all generations were shown, it loaded all 1088 people no problem. Now that the world tree is surged to mine, I can't load all generations because my computer has a heart attack, a seizure and explodes, then times out and shows less generations.

2. The information we have for some profiles is different. Specifically, the pictures. The pictures you pick for some of these people are different than mine. Mine are better. Like, the one for King John was a nice royal painting on mine and now it's some pencil drawing or something. Is there a setting so I can see the picture I want instead?? Also, I was working on an elaborate, self-written biography for King John in his "About" section. Where the hell is it!? It's gone and I worked hard on it; that's not fair! The new bio just shows what children he had. What kind if bio is that? Here's my bio. I have two parents and a sister (sources, references.) What an exciting bio.

3. FINALLY, the world tree looks like garbage. It's cool that you have everything there, but is there not a simple setting that allows me to see the tree with the profiles that only I manage so I get my view of 1088 people I previously had while still connected to the world tree? I see I'm related to William the Conquerer. I knew that, but on my unmerged tree, I hadn't got there yet. I was going to add him the next day or so.

In a nutshell, the tree lags, my bios and pics are gone and it doens't look too organized.

Sorry if I sound mad. I'm not, I'm just a little annoyed. Maybe you guys could help me.

Thanks.

Dylan, I totally understand. I have complained about exactly t he same things to no avail. Sorry you are in such distress.

1.) Your tree is bigger now....much bigger....and won't fit on 1 screen...but you can click on the 'cloud' over the head of family and advance up another generation easily..

2.) Send us the profile with the questionable photo of King John....(it has been brought to my attention that someone is putting less than good profile pictures in some profiles).....a new photo/portrait can be 'added' to photos under Media...and designated as the one to use for a profile..

I DO note however, that you mention King John......surely you did not expect the be the only person connected to such a person that far in the past??!!

3.) Someone else will have to answer the question about seeing only your profiles....but I do not believe that you can claim 'sole' ownership of profiles beyond a certain point.....families marry into families...their children marry into other families....etc.....hence the 'connection' to a vast number of people...

Forgot to address the bio you were writing....

Check first to see if there is not already a 'bio' for the profile......unfortunately, when writing anything you have to remember to 'save' the info....(I have had to re-write a few myself.....).

But please remember...older profiles are NOT your sole property to edit....they are often managed my a large number of people....who are in accord regarding the people involved. Unfortunately, I find a lot of profiles that have no 'bio' in them.....and should have data....As long as your bio fits the correct person and is well-sourced, and accounts for the people showing on the profile....you should have no problem in adding an 'about me'.

@Judith Loubris Thank you for being on my side. My family and I think this is retarded.

@Fay Baldwin I would like to use my bio I made for King John, but too bad it doesn't exist anymore. Thanks, guys. Real smooth. Use this pic for King John: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bestand:King_John_from_NPG.jpg - It looks way better and actually has facial details. Who the hell put a pencil drawing there?

Yes, I know I'm not the only living descendant of King John. I'm not retarded.

It seems the only thing I have resolved now is privacy. They should make a new view option to view profiles that only you manage so you can have it organized your own way. OR, better yet, have two different trees. One public world tree with my sh*t on it, then a separate private one. How old is Geni now? Like 6 years? Jesus, make this option. Wtf are they doing?

LOL, hope what I wrote was entertaining.

Thanks.

Which King John, Dylan?

I never said that you were retarded....being part of the 'Big tree" takes some getting used to....and I totally understand how you are feeling right now....most of us that worked for years and years independently have had to same reaction...

As long as you organize the tree in accordance with general genalogical methods...you should have no problems....

If you want a totally private tree...you are at the wrong place....and no Wtf about it..

Was intersting, but not that amusing.

if i'm not mistaken, geni came up with the concept of 'unconnected' trees a while ago. me thinks this would be a great option for Dylan.
just my 2 cts

Not if he insists on working as far back as King John....there is NO such option.(I do not believe).. It would go against Geni's stand that no one further than 1700 should be 'private'....

come to think of it:
why not apply the privacy rules to these 'unconnected' trees only and not to the world tree?
IMO the concept of a world tree and geni's privacy rules up to, what, 6? generations are incompatible.
this way there wouldn't be a world tree populated by private profiles and all the privacy lovers would have their own private trees

My Heritage is the right place for Dylan, unless like many of us he becomes accustomed to the Geni World Tree and sees the utility and beauty of it.

I have a tree on Ancestry. I have a tree on Reunion on my home computer. I even have a small tree on My Heritage. The tree I add to and share with family is on Geni and I am quite satisfied, but I do download to my home computer periodically.

There are standalone trees on Geni but once you are connected to the World Tree, your public profiles (beyond 4th great grandparents) will be merged.

I realize that people join sites with expectations and pre-conceived notions but one's pre-conceived notions can land you in trouble.

The Geni concept is that share ancestors and in particular shared notable individuals like King John (whichever King John you mean) are managed by many people and are ideally curated. Anyone can contribute to the profile, although preferably in consultation with the Curator and managers. Starting a discussion thread and posting the URL of the profile is the best method.

Images are interesting. They are very subjective and as such people have strong opinions and are quite bothered by others' choices for their shared ancestors. I certainly understand. I have had exactly those strong opinions, but over time I have taught myself to relax because images ARE subjective. Wouldn't it be nice if I could see the image I thought best and you could see the image you thought best? That's not possible right now but there's no reason you can't start a discussion and have those who manage and care about the profile all weigh in.

As for your bio being overwritten by the merge, someone else needs to comment on what happened. I suspect it's because the profile was locked, but since you haven't posted a URL I can't check it out. I agree with you that that is not optimal. In many (most?) instances, what I have seen is that the About Mes from the merged profiles aggregate with dotted lines between them.

Since I assume King John is curated, he should have a good bio. I am sorry yours was deleted. There's no reason you could not propose to replace the "bio" that is there or add to it. That's called collaborative genealogy.

Your bio and suggested image were not lost at all. Please see John I "Lackland", King of England - my 23rd great grand father.

There is still some merging needed in this area as it's popular. But that should be completed soon so bear with us.

I prefer your image and bio myself. :). Thank you for the contribution.

20th great grandfather :)

Great, John's About Me illustrates what I wrote above about merging creating an aggregated About Me.

And I notice that the Curator's Note encourages people to contribute and contact the curator.

21st great grandfather.

P.S. The Lion in Winter was a great movie..

I liked both versions. The first one was Peter O Toole and hatherine Hepburn and the secorn was Patrick s. I forget his last name.and I think it was GlennClose but I am not sure.

Patrick Stewart .....

Didn't see the 2nd version...the 1st is one of my favorite movies. It also had Timothy Dalton (who was later one of the James Bond's) and Anthony Hopkins.

It's probably time to get back on topic. This message string is supposed to be for problems that need a curator to help. Dylan's problem is not something curators can resolve.

Erica Howton

Yes! My bio is still there and (holy sh*t) you used my image for King John! Okay, keep in mind I am still working on the bio for him. I took a little break from Geni when I was working on that then came to this mess-up a few days later. And thanks for preferring it!

@rvk I had an unconnected tree, but then these curators took all my people and merged it into their tree like when Hitler took the blondes (like me) and merged them into his society.

@Hatte Blejer Someone else told me about MyHeritage (can't remember who) like a few days ago and said it's private. Well, if I knew about that when I started my family tree on May 17, 2013 that would have been helpful. Little bit of a pain to recreate my entire family tree on another site, but thanks for the tip. I wish I could like download my tree onto a MyHeritage tree or an offline tree. No, not offline because family couldn't see that online.

@Fay Baldwin

Yes, wtf about it.

NOW, is there a way to download my tree or something? If I can't get help here or if you guys just don't care, I could just download it so you can't touch it. I just want my own tree ONLY for my family (and fourth cousins + aren't family). So friggin' annoying.

Thank you for getting my name right.
