Thanks, Erica! One baby step at a time... :-)

Anne Witherspoon

James Alexander Witherspoon III

The profiles for this husband and wife are private, even though both were born in the 17th century. Both have pending merges that are hung up because the manager hasn't been on Geni since 2011. Is this something a curator can help with? TIA!

Maven

Can you check on the correct name styling for Catherine, daughter of Richard Weston, first Earl of Portland, wife of Sir Richard White of the Inner Temple, & mother of Frances, who married John Petre?

Private User

The manager IS active (on line in December). The tree is unconnected. Try sending him a collaboration request with a comment such as "I believe there is a match to your profile Jane Wilson. If you agree, please accept this request, and the merge requests sent separately."

Erica: that's a bit difficult, as her first name has several spellings: CathArine, CathErine, KathArine, KathErine, etc. (I believe it was "Katharine" in on her memorial tablet, but even in her lifetime it varied quite a bit.)

She would be referred to in common parlance as "Lady Catherine (or however it was spelled that day) Weston", and after marriage as "Lady Catherine White".

It's a courtesy title (like "Lord Peter Wimsey", who didn't have a title of his own but was called "Lord Peter" because he was a Duke's second son). She would not, however, be "Catherine, Lady (Weston OR White)" - precisely because she only had a courtesy title.

The proper use of English titles and forms of address is, unfortunately, a rather abstruse and convoluted topic....

Marve, so put them all down.

Maven .... I figured as much just from my quick glance, :). She's the daughter of an Earl - did she have a title in her own right, as well as the courtesy "Lady" by marriage?

Also someone sent me a good link for constructing women's names; I'll try and find it and add to the project overview.

As far as I know, she had no title of her own. The title "Earl of Portland" was created specifically for her father, and he hadn't started out with any titles at all. Usually when there's a secondary title involved, it was acquired at an earlier stage of the family's history - and often is actually held by the current peer but used as a "courtesy" title by his heir. Again referring to the Wimsey family, Lord Saint-George (the Duke's only son, and Lord Peter's nephew) did not actually have a title - he was permitted to use one of his father's secondary titles as a courtesy. (Dorothy L. Sayers was sufficiently a stickler for the proprieties to get these details explained every few books.)

I love that we quote murder mysteries! So it's just resolving what "historic" spelling of Catherine to use as the "best known as" name. I tend to go with the memorial as that's a citable fact. Others insist on baptismal name ... Have fun! :). And like Judi said, feel free to pile in the AKA's.

Erica Howton, thank you for your response, I appreciate it. Are we talking about the same manager, though? Or perhaps you as a curator can see information not available to the rest of us? When I look at his 'activity tab', the most recent thing it lists is from August 2011.

As a curator I can see "last online" date as well (last login). I believe checking mail etc. Would not show as activity.

I was told that people who have NOT been on line are those that you can go to the tab UPPER RIGHT and REPORT....if you can't 'report' they have been on-line.

Fay Elizabeth Dyer, that should only apply for the report option of "Abandoned Tree". The other options of "Claimed historical profile", "Fake Profile", "Spam", "Privacy", "Deceased" should be there regardless of on-line status.

... that is, if you can't "Report" with the reason of "Abandoned Tree", then that person has logged on "recently" (within the last 'X' months).

If you *can* -- and wish to -- report an account as "Abandoned", it can be helpful to provide information about why you are reporting it (e.g.: giving the link to a match with a profile you manage that can't be merged because that person's tree is abandoned).

1.) I was addressing ONLY the question of last on-line to soften the number of unnecessary inquiries being made to Curators about whether a manager was active or not. .

2.) I thought that the space available for comments was a 'given' ...in that you should ALWAYS tell WHY you are reporting...

Sorry for the confusion.

Yes, the weather is hot, but we're expecting rain. Thanks for asking!

No what I was saying I am on the site whether or not I have anything to add or not.

I am on the site almost daily so no one will take over my stuff.Plus I am always interested in what people are saying .

Thank you.

This person needs a home: Thomas Waters, Sr.

He does not belong in the Waters family tree of Eastern Shore Virginia - he's from Chester, PA.

One manager has responded with "Not on Geni any longer". No others have.

This is far from my area of expertise but there are a couple of points worth noting.
This THomas Waters did die apparantly in VA although he wasn't born there.
There are 'half siblings' that were born after their father died according to the dates in the tree.
Some of the overviews are sparse on information making informed decisions on the tree more difficult especially for someone not familiar with the area.
You could try starting a discussion from the profile in question to attempt to find it's correct position.

I hope this helps.

That whole area of the tree is one big hairy mess due to a bunch of really bad merges.

Terry Jackson (Switzer), you should put that information in the About Me section of the profile. Even though you don't consider yourself an expert on that part of the tree, the profile currently has no information in it.

This profile have been wrongly merged, plees help to split.
I'm sending this thou I did't initiate the merge.

Johanna Johansdotter

Br Niklas

Niklas Pihl, I disconnected the alternate parents and re-added the Johanna profile to the other tree (sending the other manager a request to manage it). There is still one part that is left undone. You disconnected the husband and children, which appear to be the correct ones for your tree, since you manage them. They're private, so I can't reconnect them. Let me know if you need assistance in doing so and I can walk you through it, or if you want to make the husband public, I can do it. Be sure to let me know if this is the husband and children of the other Johanna.

Thank you Jeff Gentes,
Only one thing left that I can see 645. Christer Wickenberg is still a co manager so how to remove him from this profile?

Br Niklas

Niklas Pihl I've asked him to remove himself when I transferred management of the other profile. It's not something I can do for him. While perhaps annoying, it doesn't change your management. I think the only way to get rid of him without him removing himself would be to delete it and recreate it.

Ok thank you once more, I will wait for an answer from him and see what happens.

Br Niklas

Curator help needed, please, with Isobel Sutherland of Duffus who has two sets of parents, only one of which is correct. I sincerely hope I did not make the mistake - I do try to be very careful! I have been trying to clear a list of data conflicts/tree conflicts but find that I can not deal with this as I get the message that assigning the (correct) parents will 'split the tree'. Thank you.

Why didnt you look at the MP profile...the parents were listed there.
