Hi Ben,
Yes, it is annoying. But it's also annoying when someone merges two completely different people.... and then someone else does it.... etc. etc. etc.
If there are certain profiles you're having an issue with, you could send a message to that curator-- I'm sure we would take care of your merges ASAP. It's also a little hard for us to keep track of all the profiles we curate-- there is no "curator merge center." So maybe it got "lost" in the shuffle.
Also--- if *I* can help, personally, please let me know!
Heather
Hi Shmuel:
If the approach to the problem of mis-merges is to stop all merges to certain profiles, then could the permanently blocked profiles then be marked out or somehow so that people like me can just click "No" on our merge center and clear our Merge Issue list? (A warning something like: "Permanently blocked from merges" or something similar.)
Personally, I think that a permanently blocked profile misses the point of a collaborative tree, particularly in the area of educating fellow users. But all I can do is suggest. And to me it seems better, in the sense of educating fellow users, to give people the chance to make mistakes. Further, if the issue is to somehow increase the speed of getting to one-person-one-profile, then to me it seems like this sort of strategy is actually slowing things down. With blocked profiles, you can't finish out merges or fix other nearby mistakes.
Hi Heather:
I appreciate the offer to help. Mostly I was venting after finding my Merge Center go from 9 to 25 on what seemed to be the placement of a new block on a profile. There is one profile (currently adding five merge issues to my Merge Center) that has been blocked for a long time, and may be a case of falling through the crack, but I think the curator is aware of it, and I anticipate it will be fixed soon.
But I really do oppose blocking as strategy. Such attempts at controlling what other people are doing really don't help in a collaborative environment. If the idea is to just disseminate knowledge in one direction only, then blocking makes perfect sense. If the idea is to turn the tree into a collaborative education tool, then this is the wrong direction.
I'm all for getting it right. I guess it's more a matter of how we get there. But no, no need for help - appreciate the offer. -Ben
Ben,
http://www.geni.com/projects/LOCKED-PROFILES
This is a list of locked profiles. It's not complete yet because curators had the ability to lock profiles before they could create projects. When I lock a profile, I try to leave a brief statement about why it is blocked.
Also, I am sure you have already done this, I'm posting this for those afraid to talk to a curator. SEND US AN INBOX MESSAGE! We are all nice people. Tell us what you need. If we can't give you what you want, we can at least explain why.
Hi Maria:
Appreciate the info. Will be following the group.
Any advise on what to do with the profiles that are trying to be merged into locked ones? My instinct at this point is to reject them all, just to clear my Merge Center. Or is it preferable to keep them dormant and just do the subtraction each time I look at how many issues are outstanding?
In the Geni release last Thursday we finally got one of the things we asked for when Geni announced the concept of Master Profiles: Two Master Profiles cannot be merged, not even by a curator.
Combined with the fact that Geni is not stacking profiles anymore the need for locking profiles should be less.
Appreciate the information, Bjorn. Apparently if two master profiles exist for the same person, one has to be "de-mastered". We ran into that over the weekend with, I think it was William II Le Liberateur d'Arles, but my memory sometimes fails me.
Still, would appreciate advice on how to proceed with locked profile merges. Is it better to simply reject them, or leave them be for the time being?
Ben, I would agree with Erica on that. That number in the Inbox tab won't go away until I read it, so I take care of those before I even hit the discussions. The more info in the inbox message, the easier it is to help you, so post a link whenever you can.
Curators have been asking Geni for a better way to track our MP's. Once we have that, we can make certain that all the locked profiles are on the project I referenced before and we can review our MP's more easily. I personally must have a couple hundred MP's and Erica probably hit a thousand already. That's a lot for us to keep track of!
Can a curator clean up Amos Alcott and Abigail May Alcott at the bottom of this page? They are the parents of Louisa May Alcott, who is the profile of the day...would be nice if it looked better!
Thanks.

Could not do the first one-- it's a private tree. I suggest reaching out to the manager and asking if he would mind making it public, considering how long the person has been dead.
Could not do the 4th one, one is living, the other is dead, but the death date is too recent. I can't make them public. I would reach out to both managers and see if you can make headway that way.
The middle two are done.
My Griffiths' have gone. From Henry on down through Mary Polly Deadman. Help.
Samuel Griffith
Some are missing before Henry and some after Henry. I can't do anything because Henry is locked.
Help.
Hi, I was wondering if someone can look into Nicholas Ryan Bouchard
Nicholas Ryan Bouchard ( I know this has been brought up before).
Anyway, I went looking at a lot of his tree and discovered that he must have copied it form someone in my line. I have pictures that I posted, and information that now there are a ton of dupes of my family and others. He hasn't been on since March 7th, and i have sent a number of request to his family member, and no answer. I would be happy to merge the files, but he won''t answer. Can anything be done, or acces to fix the mess he made?? Thanks
