I need help adding my fifth great grandparents. It irks me that people set profiles on private "especially" for generations that far away. I thought maybe if I added my fifth great grandfather as a brother to my fourth great grandfather and somehow merge it I would be able to do that, but now I'm just confusing myself. Would anyone known how to do this?

know*

Joel M. Smith

is the grandson of @Reuben Smith and @Mary Smith (Rose). Reuben's parents are @John Smith and Amy Smith. For some reason I was only able to tag the two people. I'm new to the whole "tagging" thing.

Matthew Wilson Martinthe tagging doesn't work so great.
RE: 5th ggfather, why can't you create his profile in the normal manner?
The solution you are thinking of is very possible but i can't think why on earth you would go to the effort?

Because the 5th ggf and ggm are set to private, and I wanted to extend further. I just now found out how to get to see who the manager is, and it's actually a curator. That's kind of disappointing, finding out that a curator has a profile so far out set to private.

Never mind. I just looked at his profile. He is not a curator, but I knew I recognized his name. Turns out, on June 28th, I messaged him asking him to remove some profile from private, and it turns out he did "not" do that. That was 4 months ago. :(

So profiles already exist for your 5ggparents but they are set to private and the manager is not responding?
That sucks but there's not much anyone can do about it, you could just create your own profiles for your 5ggparents and one day in the future maybe merge with that person's profiles.
What about your 6ggparents do you know them? Are they already on Geni but private, or public?

How do I create profiles for just them? And for some reason I can't delete the profiles I just deleted. The little "X" isn't showing up. And I don't have the information, but my great aunt knows who my 6ggparents are. They are not on geni yet.

Joel M. Smith is the son of Reuben Smith and Mary Smith not their grandson.
I think the problem is that you have created Unknown Profile as the son of John Smith when they are actually the same person? Merging the two Johns would merge their sons Reuben.
But the profile for John Smith I is private (who knows why!) so it's academic to some point.

Yes, I want to merge them, but the little magnifying glass wasn't showing up with the information for both of them. I thought maybe I could do it that way, which is why I did that.

Sorry Matthew you've lost me, "I can't delete the profiles I just deleted"?
If you deleted a profile it is gone forever, how/why would you delete it again?
It might help if you tagged the profile for your fourth great grandfather that you are trying to add parents to. If tagging is not working just copy and paste the URL from his profile into this discussion.

Is John Smith I your 5xggfather?

I'm sorry. I meant "I can't delete the profiles I just 'created.'" lol. Sorry for that. My fourth great grandfather is Reuben Smith: Reuben Smith

His parents (my fifth great grandparents), whom I want to add are John Smith and Amy Smith (Thornton). I had created a John Smith as a brother of my fourth great grandfather, Reuben, and added his wife, along with another Reuben, thinking maybe I would be able to merge John with John, Amy with Amy and Reuben with Reuben, but the magnifying glass never gave me the merge option to do so.

I'm sorry for all the confusion.

Oh cool. All I needed to do was copy and paste the URL, and that tags them? That's pretty sweet!!

Okay, I just read more information that my Aunt sent me...so...This is the line directly to Ralph Smith (also known as Ralph Smyth), who was a mayflower passenger. We know that Ralph's son was Samuel. We are "thinking" that Samuel's son was John (which would be my 6th ggf) and that his son is John (my fifth, who is the one we are having trouble with). If we can figure out that Reuben's grandfather was "also" John Smith, and that it is the correct one, then we will find that link. Kent, Reuben Smith's oldest son had his DNA done, and it was a match on all 67 markers of descendants of Ralph Smith. I don't know what that means, but that's what she has written for me.

I got a public profile match for you

Please examine carefully as I doubt it's sourced out. But you're moving "up tree" enough that I may be able to help validate the research. Smith is a tough name for obvious reasons.

If it looks good to you - merge!

Yes!! That is definitely it!! Thank so much! Now I'm going to see if I can merge the profiles I created.

My plan worked: going out to lunch and letting someone else clean up my mess :)

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with something. I am trying to disconnect Jakob Mahler (link below) from the Bohemian Mahler line on Geni, but I am encountering a lot of problems and ended up accidentally deleting several Mahler profiles on Geni and unfortunately I've created a mess. Do you know how to

1). Get back the profiles I deleted because I've clearly upset some folks, and
2). disconnect Jakob Mahler from the tree?

Jacob Mahler

Please let me know if you can help. Best, Eve

Eve Band -- you can see the list you have deleted at http://www.geni.com/list/deleted.

I've undeleted a bunch of them, but you should check your list.

Now, with regard to Jacob Mahler ... is the problem that his parents are incorrect? Given that there is a spouse and lots of children, it doesn't seem that it should be removed in any way.

Ahh ... I see that Jakob is connected to the wrong century. Hopefully you'll have the info to eventually get him connected in the right place!

Dear Dan,
Thank you so much for your help! Currently un-deleting all the rest of those profiles...
Regarding my great-grandfather Jakob Mahler--he is in no way related to the rest of the Bohemian Mahlers. I actually have no idea who his parents or siblings are. I don't want to remove him completely, just split the trees. Is there a way to do that? Thanks,
Eve

Please, we're working on correcting the Mahler tree. Thanks.

Dear Randy, I am currently undeleting all of those profiles so everything should be restored by tonight! Very sorry for the mess

Could a curator please tell me when last these people were online:

Hello!

There seem to be some private profiles around the area of my 17th great grandfather William Keith (1389-1444):

Sir William Keith, Kt.

Fixed.

FYI, All:

You no longer have to ask a curator for when a user was last on-line.

Simply go to the profile of the person, click the Actions button, select Report item.

If that person has already been reported, there will be a message to that effect.

Otherwise, look at the "Reason" list:

If the person has been on-line recently, there will be NOT be a choice of "Abandoned Tree".

If you do have that choice, then you can report the person as having 'abandoned' their tree yourself.

There is no guarantee of any action (Geni's staff has many criteria to consider before possibly taking any action), but you should get an email notification (if you haven't turned them off!!) when they begin to consider your request. You will NOT get a followup note as to what actions they may have taken (for privacy reasons).

Not quite. There are still 30 private profiles in William Keith's Family Tree.

If you go to Lists, choose William Keith as the focus person, and filter on private, you'll see the full list. Several dozen have been made public in the past few hours, but those remaining will require the help of the managers.
