New quandary (and room for improvement)

Today I received a request from someone (whose user name I neglected to write down) to add the following profile to the DAR project:

Captain Thomas Hughes

Apparently, he had once been approved by the DAR, but his DAR status has been revoked (or at least questioned), so I declined the request, assuming that I would be given the option to add a note explaining why I declined it. No such luck. Worse, all traces of the request have been expunged from my Inbox (including my Inbox History), and I have no way to send a message to the requester since I have no record of her user name.

Here are my questions:

1) Is there a way to find out who sent me the request?

2) Is there a way to block this profile from being added to the DAR project, in case someone tries to add him in the future? (This profile already had a link to the DAR site where this person's current DAR status is explained, so merely documenting the problem isn't enough to prevent users from attempting to add him to the DAR project.)

3) Could Geni consider revising the Request feature so that:

a) request transactions (who, what, when, and resolution) are added to the Inbox History

b) users can add notes to Approve or Reject replies

This feature doesn't seem to have been thought out very thoroughly.

Thanks!

Marilyn

I think I am the one who made the request. I make them often. I don't keep up with the ones I request, but am notified when one does.
My issue is with the status of that Patriot with the DAR. The following "Red Flag" says

PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN DISCOVERED WITH AT LEAST ONE PREVIOUSLY VERIFIED PAPER - SEE ANCESTOR’S FULL RECORD

That statement looks alaming, but it only applies to specific application to the DAR. The specific application is marked by an EL in the list. One of my Patriots Squire Boone (brother of Daniel) has the same alarming message. It only discounts the application with the EL on it. On the DAR Patriot page, there is a list of all applications. The first column is the number assigned to the approved DAR member. The second column is a signal that more than one set of lineage papers were submitted for other ancestors. Those are called supplementals. The third column has the S & D in blocks. The D is what you click on to see the lineage application. Then there will be an EL if DAR genealogists have marked the application has having a problem. The others are fine.

There are many DAR Patriots that are "Red Flagged" and that flag may be temporary. When they started taking applications before 1900 they were not as strict as they are today. Over the years they have gotten stricter & when they find errors or an absence of proper documentation they "Red Flag" it. The database is added to constantly, with new approved Patriots & applications. They also make notes on the profiles that are not up to standard. It is up to the descendants making application to DAR to make additions or corrections to satisfy the requirements for membership.
My practice in the light of these issues is to copy the "Red Flag" into the About Me section. The more serious red flags might be regarding whether or not the Ancestor actually served in the American Revolution. Some have found to have died before it started. Other problems could include confusion because many Patriots have the same name. The specific problem about @Captain Thomas Henry Hughes is totally minor and that Patriot absolutely should be listed in the Project. In fact that message is so minor that I ignore it and have not copied it into the About Me section. The DAR database is easy to use, but it takes awhile to become familiar with it. I am in that process of learning how to use it.

Faustine I right-click to copy the URL to the clipboard and then paste into the Geni message. Captain Thomas Hughes

Faster. :)

Thanks Erica

Having trouble merging this.. maybe someone else can try. I get an "We are experiencing technical difficulties".

http://www.geni.com/merge/compare/6000000007714360245?return=duplic...

I get the same message.

Jeff en Hatte,
It's my MP and I also received a 'technical dificulties' message.
I took the MP off and then I could merge them. Strange.

Was it locked, Private User? I occasionally get this message and it usually means there's something I haven't accounted for.

The error was that the nicknames field was locked. This shouldn't cause an error -- it should just ignore the nicknames of the non-MP. I'll see if i can fix that.

Mike Stangel, I have some concerns about being able to lock the nicknames field. Why is that allowed?

When I see the other name fields locked, I hope and pray that the nickname field won't be locked, so that users are not fully disenfranchised. If someone really wants to put Girard as an alternative for Gérard, I like for them to do that rather than getting hostile about locking.

Ditto,

Since many are recorded in archives, obituaries, etc. - under a variety of given, etc. names.

Users should have the ability to add them - in the "Also known as" field.

I agree with Justin here. People may put names in the nicknames field just so that there are wider search perameters for that person allowing for common mis-spellings for example.

Alas, I'm not your guy for that discussion. Questions and concerns about the features of the site should be addressed to Michelle Elena Kempner or posted to help.geni.com

Justin Durand, I have no problem removing the locking from nicknames.

Michelle, that would be great. Thanks!

Mike, are you and Michelle different people? ;)

Cute, Justin!

LOL

Greetings curators!

I was hoping someone could help me with a divorce.
William ‘the settler’ Arnold
should not be married to Grace Peake

Thanks!

Private,
Grace is no longer William's wife ;-)

Private do you want the relationship removed completely or do you want there to be a divorce registered?

Thanks Private User

Private User
Oh, yeah I wanted the relationship removed completely.

i have 1 simlar problem and another question Private and Private User but it's a bit more complacated i am holding out on adding the son of Guy Donald "Don" LaPoint because he divorced his wife after having two kids who are over age 18 now.. and i wasn't sure how to handle that aspect (step-kids ex-mum with one ex-dad with the other etc etc) and also Henry B. Douglas doing some more reseach on my family i found that his wife died young and he remaired how do i set up the line with the new wife and children and so on..

Private -- in the "About" you can describe who a descendant is living with. However, I would approach this in this way:

Add Guy's 1st wife and the two kids. They are the biological parents. Then set the relationship to be "Divorced" (will show as dotted line on the Tree View).

I would use the Tree View to then add the 2nd wife of Guy (click on the yellow arrow to the side of Guy's "box" ... that's just one of several ways to do it). Then you can add the children (most easily by clicking on the yellow arrow below the 2nd wife, because then you won't get asked "to which does this child belong?").

Make sense? Geni won't let you show "custody" or "living with" via the relationships, but you can certainly put that in the About section, if you choose to do so.

ok thanks i will try that..

By the way, it doesn't provide much 'help' to give a link to a private profile (such as Guy's). You can use the "Family" --> "Lists" option (at the top of every Geni window), showing the 'advanced controls', to easily find and quickly change (if desired) the privacy settings of your profiles.

it's my grandpa's son (my uncle not my grandfather) that divorced his wife Dan Cornett but yes i under stand the solution.. also will use the same some what modified solution for the problem with his mothers father (wife died young) remarried a divorcee and adopted her kids)

i did not have set to private.. but he recently passed away so maybe it got changed when i marked him as deceased

re: adoptive parents vs biological parents ... a short discussion of alternatives for showing that is here: http://www.geni.com/discussions/82289

Full support for adoptive relationships is a planned future feature (no date set yet).
