ATTENTION Curators, please assist

If we only didn't have to SEE that there was a private profile or a possible match with a private profile...it would be much less frustrating for a lot of us.

Is there an explanation for this other than perhaps a bug.

There are many additional instances with the same locked occupation.

Please check for last online Private User He has private profiles for at least one Mormon Pioneer.

Private User is an abandoned GEDCOM upload, never logged in on after the upload on July 20, 2009 - 1989 Added By profiles.

I have reported the account as abandoned, but don't expect that it will be released. It is better that you post links to private profiles that are BLOCKING you so we can check if anyone can help you.

There are as many as 65 users in that line who can help you with private profiles, a long time collaborator and active user Private User is one of them.

Private User here is the problem John Smith Harris There are 12 other private profiles of wives of that generation.

Cecil personally I would just ignore it and build trees as you can from other sources.

Something is peculiar here. I started my day managing 6,475 profiles and 5,696 profiles added. After I worked most of the day adding profiles I ended up with 6,314 managing profiles and 5,755 added profiles. How come I have less management of my profiles? Thanks.

Ps you can "hide" the match (remove it) canceling the merge request.

Cecil at a guess 1) merge activity 2) counter updates that need to run.

Cecil, we determined that some of our statistics had drifted off the correct values, so I've been recalculating them for everyone who has logged on recently. You should find that the newer number is the correct one.

Overview > Immediate Family > Add Family

I always did mine from the Tree View. Am wondering --

If you do it from Profile, Add Family - Do you see as quickly as you do from adding to the tree both 1) whether they made it a Public Profile or not and 2) whether they popped any suggested matches?

1) I add profiles from the overview on iPad. Since it defaults to living I ALWAYS edit in the Basics tab where you can adjust privacy. This a best practice for data entry anyway!

2). There is no way for The Geni database to compare for matches until the profile is created and saved.

3) it is slower to add profiles from overview, but I like it, because it forces me to think about it more. I put in a link on where I got my data from immediately. Wish I had done that before when I was entering from tree view.

Just looked at Adding from Overview -- see only fields are "First Name", "Last Name", and "Email Address" [as labelled in 'American English'] - way less than from Tree View - tho I also frequently go back in to Edit.

re: 2] Yes, I understand Matches can only be shown after Saving; after creating from Tree View - I click "save", am returned to Tree View - will see immediately if Public or Private - and if I wait about a second or two. it will also show me any suggested matches, if it found any. In the past month or so, there have been 3 times when these came up really fast on Profiles of Family I had just added - all valid. So currently impressed.

In counterpoint, I like adding from the tree view, but I only enter the basic dates on that initial add screen. The next action is to click on the just-added profile (which, for my Preferences setting takes me to a new tab) and first add the Source (while Geni is looking up matches and partner matches in the background). By the time I've finished adding the Source, I can then quickly edit the profile to add locations (if any, with the nice auto-lookup) and deal with matches after I've specified all the info from my source.

Usually, by doing the Source first, there are no delays in doing anything after that.

As said, it doesnt matter for me as I ALWAYS use the "edit basics" tab. Where it saves time is big family entry which thank goodness I'm rarely doing.

I always enter from the tree view. Entering from the overview, everything has to be edited anyway. Might as well enter from the tree and get everything right the first time. The auto fill helps also. Also I never use the locations, always edit locations I hate to see zip codes in colonial America for example. I wish Geni would come up with a complete family group sheet style page where everything could be entered instead of having to save one page, then tab to the next.

Especially on forgetful days when someone might click the next tab without saving first :(

FYI: The expanded location details are used on the profile Overview ... so, don't be misled by the zip code on the single line shown in "Edit Profile". I almost always open the location details to be sure it 'populates' with what I want.

FYI2: Location lookup always relates to current political boundaries; one way to handle differences (for the time being) is to use the first line of the "Expanded location" for something like "Colonial XX County, Virginia, now", and the rest of the location being (for example) the current West Virginia location.

Having the current geo-location is particularly helpful, I will say, for burial locations -- makes it much easier to find a memorial marker! <grin>

FYI2: The current location is also necessary for geo-coordinates, which are looked up via the Google API used by Geni and are stored -- just not currently visible to us users, but can be used for mapping. (Try http://www.geni.com/map for an example with your family ... that's located at the "Family -> Map" option as an example of what could be done.)
