Not sure what to do about this:
This guy (Nicholas Ryan Bouchard) uploaded a tree that more or less duplicates mine. Unfortunately, I've never gotten any responses from him when trying to merge them.
I've gotten some of it taken care of it, but I'm still listed as having two wives and two brothers, when I have one of each. Even my wife, who is a Geni member, can't get her doppleganger merged into herself.
David, looking at his activity, he's only created 132 profiles. But he manages almost 18k, which makes me think he has inherited profiles abandoned by another user. Nicholas has been reported. None of the claimed profiles in Nicholas' family group have been logged in in 2011. I hope CS takes care of this soon.
Nicholas Ryan Bouchard didn't inherit an abandoned tree; I'm pretty sure he downloaded a massive tree, then re-uploaded it either by accident or because he thought he'd get his own private tree that way. We raised a fuss at the time, and since then we've been merging his thousands of duplicates as best we can.
He hasn't been on in nearly two years, and as David pointed out, he's never once responded to any of us about anything. I think it's about time to remove his name and release the remaining profiles. I'd be happy to take them over
We have discussed Nicholas and Brandon Bouchard many times, but the conversations always end when Geni tells us that they are not going to do anything more to help with the situation than they've already done. Most of the remaining duplicates are in Living through five generations back- or whose generations cannot be easily determined because of no dates in many layers of generations of profiles.
I am continuing to "request" the merges to be complete even though I know the blue dots may never be completed- all in anticipation that Geni will one day give us a real solution. Until then, we all share in the frustration.
Private User - If you have access to both profiles of your wife, and one is hers, the other unclaimed - enter her e-mail address (the one she uses on her claimed profile) in the unclaimed profile of her.
Long after Geni stopped letting Basic members approve merges, they let them accept invites and then accept that merge request/suggestion that geni then generated for their own profile.
Private User Thanks, that is what I expected. I don't see why Geni wont let us see last online unless we are collaborating. Just makes more work for the Curators
.
David Lee Kaleita You should try Firefox :-)
I was asked by someone (a curator?) at least a year ago, if not two, to collaborate with the purpose of a profile merging. I agreed, but my problem with that is that since then I am getting the daily news of the activities of this person. He adds sometimes up to ten new profiles a day, historic figures from ancient Rome to modern Iceland, obviously none of them connected to me. This clogs up my mail so much that sometimes I miss genuine family notices.
Now another curator asked me to collaborate on another merger but I am scared, thinking of the added flood of her activities. Is there a way of disengaging and stopping the collaboration after the original merger is completed?
Sarah, you can adjust the e-mails you receive on the appropriate settings page:
http://www.geni.com/account_settings/notifications
Sorry, David, that setting page still does not solve my problem. The only steps I could take is disabling "new additions to my tree" and "new photos and documents". But this would stop all genuine family additions and photos. Even if I left the weekly summary of activities, I would still have to sift through the loads of historic material to find any close family notices.
Sarah, you can list your collaborators at http://www.geni.com/list/collaborators
Then you can choose to stop collaborating with any or all of them as you wish
Hope that helps
Ahhh ... that is currently are really obscure link to find from one's profile -- although the URL is simple enough! (The link is under Account Settings , then select Managed Profiles, and on the right side, embedded in the text, is the word "collaborators" with a link!)
http://www.geni.com/list/collaborators
That should list only YOUR collaborators -- which you can then click on "stop collaborating".
The funny things is, David, that he doesn't even appear on that page. I only have two genuine relatives listed as my collaborators. Could someone figure out what kind of connection I have with this gentleman? He is
