how can this profile be 'private'?
http://www.geni.com/people/Pierre-Ren%C3%A9-Destroismaisons/6000000...
he was born in 1744, I'm trying to work on this tree, one of his sisters is my 5th ggm. Help?
Private User There are three profiles that "claim" this one to be within their MFG. One is a profile with dates in the 1600s. That one has been reported already as a claimed historical profile I assume. The other two are contemporary, living people whose relationship to your profile is said to be 3rd great granddaughter. Which is wrong unless two people with the same name got merged or the tree is wrong.
Angus Wood-Salomon yes that is the tree, but I have just added all the siblings onto the tree that I have built. How can I merge those two trees? Do I have to leave the 'private' Pierre Rene alone? Seems like a lot of extra work, just to get things straightened out.
Hatte Rubenstein Blejer I don't think I know what MFG means right off the bat. hmmmm
Angus Wood-Salomon
this is my 6th great grandfather
http://www.geni.com/people/Jacques-Fran%C3%A7ois-Destroismaisons-di...
He is the father of Pierre Rene, who is set to private
Hatte Rubenstein Blejer
so since he is my 6th ggf, the translation is that I am SOL? Back into the 1700's someone can keep a profile private? That's ridiculous. But their is another public provile out there for Pierre Rene, so if I tag onto that one, then there will still be 2 Pierre Rene's in the same tree, because I will be able to merge all the other profiles, except for Pierre Rene.
ok, so now instead of having 12 children, my 6th great grandfather:
http://www.geni.com/people/Jacques-Fran%C3%A7ois-Destroismaisons-di...
he has 13, children, 2 Pierre Rene's because of the private profile. I don't know what else to do, but leave it this way? Is this all that can be done?
Thanks for all the help.
This is the manager of those private profiles http://www.geni.com/people/B%C3%A9atrice-Picard/6000000003101742111
Last online Mar 9, 2011, I don't think they will release those profiles.
Private User -- re: having a private profile "stuck onto" a tree ....
I have not yet found a way to "disconnect a private child" from a public parent profile -- only Geni staff possibly could, and they are -- properly so -- reluctant to mess with folks' private profiles (even it they ought not be private by most "common sense").
... there are ways to disconnect a 'private parent' from public children (the same way one corrects multiple and/or incorrect parent links), but not the reverse (at this time).
Geni's most recent policy [if I'm understanding it correctly] is that users can kep their profiles marked as private as far as five generations back- even if those profiles are connected to the Big Tree. That means it will be common to see "extra" siblings/children in the BT right around that 5th generation back boundary (and perhaps even further than that if there are no dates in the profile an/or they are actually zombies). Gaining the cooperation of the private profile owners seems to be the only solution at this point. Barbara, I suspect that yours is a typical example.
Where it REALLY gets messy is when the creators/managers of those private profiles abandon their Geni account altogether. Geni has stated that they will no longer intervene in freeing those up for merging- which means there will remain a huge number of these phantom (greyed out) profiles hanging around basically forever. We're apparently expected to just grit our teeth and look away when we encounter these.
Maybe not free them up for merging, but it'd be nice to be able to disconnect them from the "public" tree where there are correct public counterparts!
If one wishes to have a private, isloated tree ... more power to them.
However, if they wish to "connect" with the public "Forest", then there should be rules (enforced) about what "age" of profiles can be kept private. If not, then what will happen as the profiles "age" and information about them becomes public anyway (such as in census data)? Should they be allowed to stay connected to the public "Forest" and still remain private? I think not.
This is really a side-bar better suited for this discussion topic: http://www.geni.com/discussions/99067
Private profiles - public profiles ....... and then there is the site Archives, where you can buy information from public profiles in here. Your work from which a company profits. That's NOT ok.
That's a reason why my tree is private as far as Geni allows.
IF Geni change the possibility to keep one's tree private I deeply hope, that Geni stop the possibility to google public profiles with all information - and stop Archives collection of information from our trees.

I contacted the manager, Beatrice Picard, explaining that we are 5x2 cousins, that there is already a public profile for Pierre Rene, and would she consider marking him public so that they can be merged. I also asked her if she would collaborate with me, since I was working on their large (12 kids) family. I hope she responds!
This profile is a victim of a bad merge:
Prost Peder Mattson Herdal
His father is not Nils Pedersson (my 11th great grandfather).
If he was Nils's son he would have the patronym Nilssen/Nilsson, not Mattson.
So Curators, please make him fatherless so the right father can be added.
I have found one source that says his father is Mads Rådmann from Malmö, which fits the patronym.
this profile:
Pierre François Cormier
is in the wrong position on the tree view. His parents are actually Thomas Cormier & Marie Madeleine Girouard, but I cannot move him or merge him. Nor can I remove any relationship, because when I go to the "edit" on his profile, no relationships show up! I have done this over the course of the last half hour, hoping it was just a glitch. Geni keeps telling me that I can't merge a father with a son, but the 2 Pierre's are the same, even though the birthdates are off by about 4 years. Can someone do something with this?
These two profiles are for the same person, Michel Naze. I cannot merge them as I am not Pro. Will someone merge them for me. I have been going back over my tree and verifying information that I have entered.

thank you so much! the Acadians are a difficult group. They all had large families and inter married. AND named their kids the same name. I use Stephen White's information and the PRDH when they have it for resources.
http://www.geni.com/people/Louis-Andr%C3%A9-Tremblay/60000000091291...
this man is my 5th great grandfather, I am the one who added all that information on his profile. I have requested to be added as a manager, and have been ignored. Can someone make him a MP and add me? Thank you
Why?
Personally I want to remove the names on all managers from the front-page of all public profiles and if any names should me mentioned they should be extracted from the revisions history which would give you some focus if you want that. Only the mangers of Louis André Tremblay can add another manager, and only one of them are recently active, so you can send a nice message to Private User.
Minor little thing: These two profiles got locked before the data conflicts were resolved (I think they have to be unlocked, resolved, then re-locked):
