Arne Pajula

Mari Teras is now one, please resolve data.

Debra, your lengthy message explains EVERYTHING what a motivated user of Geni feels. Believe me, I think that a majority of free users, Pro users and curators feel exactly the same way. It's a matter of principle in the first place - and I don't like principles to be abandoned, not when there are so many human dimensions involved.
What we learn from our Geni experience, is that the fundamental principles of collaboration are sound. Whatever we need to decide, stay here for now, or abandon Geni, I think we know what we're looking for.
Geni has provided a unique platform. Let's hope they can fill their commercial promise because, after all, that's a reality too.

I would move to another site, but I have been on this one for years and have a tree that I made with thousands on it. I dont know if there is a way to transfer my tree or not. If there is, i will happily leave and take MY information with me

You can easily download your gedcom here and upload that gedcom on WeRelate.org, but Geni is the absolute nr 1, there is no other site with collaboration to one tree that is as big as Geni with more than 110 million profiles ! We relate has only a 2 million profiles, better mergetools, better gedcomtools, better profilepresentations, equal rights to all users, but a worse tree view

it doesnt do me a bit of good to be attached to that big of a tree, if it ownt let me work on MY profiles because some idiot decided to attach their tree to mine

in that case you have to look for a site where nobody wants to attach trees, that kind of sites are plenty ! nice hunting !

no. i'm looking for a site that doesnt change their terms of service without giving the users a heads up that their account has basically become useless. I have been on this site for 3 years, adding thousands of profiles that I cannot fix because GENI decided that I was no longer allowed to continue the free service that I signed up for. When I signed my terms and joined, I was promised access to the profiles that I created. That's all I want right now, is to be able to work on my profiles like I have for the past 3 years. I do not think that is too much to ask for. If I wanted to pay for fancy stuff, I would have joined another site back then.

And just so you know, it will not let me save and export MY tree that I have made wilthout paying to upgrade. That is completely rediculous.

You can edit all the profiles of which you are a manager, so because you are a manager of all your added profiles you can still edit all, plus all profiles of your collaborators. The only thing you cannot is adding relatives to profiles less close than the 4th ggf and 3rd cousins, without the help of a pro user or a curator

Family of Antoine Roy is cleaned up. I'll have to work on others later and more help welcome. There are some long pending merges!

Erica Howton thank you
BTW Private User the unenglish symbols are not supported while tagging with the full URL, so there you need to use the [[PID]]. The @name has been crippled since the privacy wars last year you luckily have no clue of.
Fred Bergman what would be the point of adding anything to those profiles I manage if I still cannot merge my mother, and cannot add anybody to my tree where the interesting part starts. I have the luck to be able to walk through the cemetaries where there are most of those I am allowed to work here, so I really do not need Geni for this.

It's not important what don't can, it's important that possibilities are offered to you that can more. You can be happy in 2 ways: a. be content/satisfied with what you have and b. be horny to all you don't have and try to get that.
I think the people who choose for a are most happy !
It was always so that non pro users had more problems to find matches and to merge and there were always curators helpfull to them so they could do a great job. I never was a pro, always a non pro free user, principially. Every day I did almost 50 merges with the help of 3 curators.
So, that cannot merge your mom doesn't matter, you can, if you really want, but then you will have to accept help.
I think you have pleasure in accusing and insulting Geni and you forget to have pleasure with the Genealogy !
Don't think that I agree with the Geni measures to non pro users and don't think that I will ever accept that act as acceptable, but I try to makje the best of it and so you should do also !

Private User I agree with George will put - i also like your statement "So if there are "millions of bad merges" out there, GENI bears much of the responsibility; they did not educate users, at all, in the way most interactive websites do"

and pro members in the past have made as many a bad merge as anyone else - why just point the finger to the non-pro members and strip there rights of mergeing and adding to their families - this is entirely
wrong -

i have found one of the biggest problems in merging is that the female spouse bears the same name as her husband - I and still finding this to be the crux of the problem of merging - I refuse to merge any profile with spouse of the last surname even if names of either siblings or children look to be the same - as this is where i fel alot of the bad merging has occured -

In searching for females and their lineages with duplicae pofiles them being listed as ie "Joan (Day) Green" - it only picls up the Green name thus giving all wrong possible merges for this person - nothing shows up to match her under her maiden name - with her surname being listed as GREEN instead of DAY - thus if i want to find possible duplicatesfor her that are accurate I have to take the time of doing a manual search for her only as "Joan Day" as GENI's little search icon brings up all the wrong merges for her

AS I work back through my tree i may change back my profiles that are female spouses yet not connected to the "Big Tree" as being listed by her maiden name in the "surname field" so that I do not have to spend endless amount of time chasing down the miss-leading matches given by GENI by listing her only as "Joan (Day) Green" with her name this way you can not even acutally find her correct set of parents - or possible correct set of parents - as GENI searchs does not even attempt to look under the SURNAME of DAY with her listed as "Joan (Day) Green"

Judi

A step to rectifying that issue was implemented a few weeks back (see the Geni Blog) by renaming maiden name to birth name. More enhancements are planned. And of course curators focus a lot of our efforts on making names as easy to find yet distinct as possible; that's part of the Master Profile program. You can't merge two Master Profiles together.

As long as in the profile of the man, his wife is mentioned with the man's surname, is that in contrairy to Genealogic science. It doesn't matter how the law is, it doesn't matter what is usuble in the streets and in the families, what only matters is Genealogy !

Col. David Crawford

Could someone move him. He was son of:

John Crawford of Jamestown

Right now he is attached as the husband of his father!

Thanks!

done

Fred Bergman thanks!

its still not work right then as yet as i and doing searches or the geni search icon leads me all to the wrong connnecting females - back to work - i opened up a hornets nest....

Geni notified me that there is a conflict here but I can't fix it.
Jan Hendricks van Ness
Could someone here please assist with this?

Linda - I resolved the conflicting data, except for birth date. One profile showed 1678, the other 1685. I noted both dates, but you may want to research this.

Thank you! I will look into this.

Linda there are are profiles in those merges that are zombies (it shows they are alive) to be able to edit them we have to make them public, that tool at the moment is not working, as soon as it is fixed I will try again to merge.

Done, Linda - including some additional merges and I took the 'private' out of some profiles. If you want, for New Amsterdam profiles, you also ask help through a discussion on this project... http://www.geni.com/projects/New-Amsterdam-Immigrants - there are 75 project participants that can assist.

Angus, Fred showed me that Geni 'makes us believe' we can't take the profiles public - but actually we can. Make a profile public, refresh the merger URL, and you'll see that the profile is indeed made public.

Just a glitch, I think

Linda, I did what I could and when Angus can run the zombie script they should be OK

I have not been getting any response from the manager of some profiles (last communication I found was over 6 months ago) ... this merge:
http://www.geni.com/merge/compare/6000000001180387096
involves what looks to be a zombie. The tree below is fairly consistent, but are waiting to resolve parents. (I requested Geni to determine the status of that manager and release the profiles if no longer participating...)

Dan H. Cornett

Although the manager hasn't been online since March 2011 and the fact that the profiles seem to be inside the privacy definitions, I was able to make this profile public and complete the merge

:-)
