Dear CURATORS please do read the description.
For ADHD out there a quicky recap:
1. I add my mother (probably the most important person to exist)
2. There already is my MOTHER (public, connected to me, but I have no managment rights)
3. I have no ways to merge my MOTHER to mother
4. Do you think this is normal?

Arne, are both profiles for your mother public? Can you please link to them? That would help us help you better. Thanks.

Arne, I've initiated a merge request for your duplicate mothers. Accept the request, and everything should be fine.

Over on "Geni Pro Just Got a Whole Lot Better",
George has just said/clarified that:
"Only Pros can perform a merge. Basic users cannot perform any merges."

Geoffrey David Trowbridge -- all Basic Users now get when they click on Accept a Merge is an Ad for Pro. Basic Users cannot accept your merge requests. (I already tried it - see three posts above yours)
"Only Pros can perform a merge. Basic users cannot perform any merges."

I truly hope that they haven't removed the ability for non-Pro users to ACCEPT merges. That would be a recipe for disaster.

The new rules for basic free users are a disaster !

It is not only that non PRO users can do no merges on the historical tree, they also cannot add new profiles to the tree. So a non PRO user can only add a very limited number of people.
Has anyone tried to create a new account and start building a tree with someone born a few hundred years ago, and see what is possible then?

So much for Geni being a cooperative forum to build a world tree. I understand giving pro users certain abilities over basic users. And I think it is clear to everyone, that Geni hopes that this new policy will encourage basic users to become Pro users. And that will happen for some. But most people who have only a passive interest in geneology will not stick with it -- and as others above have said -- this will make it impossible for pro users to get good information and complete merges. Why didn't geni float the idea out there with curators or test it or something -- no thought behind the implications of this decision. And right on the heels of a major outage. What are you thinking???

Still getting the funny vertical names on my tree ... any idea if this might be fixed some day?

Arne Pajula -- If you cannot complete the merge request, try making your mother's profile public. (Check the box in the edit window that says "Make this profile public.") Then let us know, and hopefully a curator can complete the merge.

Judy,

Do you know if others see the same if they look at your part of the tree?
Do you see it in other parts of the tree?
If it is not a general problem(not all user see the same problem on the same part of the tree) it could be that clearing the browser cache may help.
If you are not sure may be you could post a link so we can see if we also have the problem.

Judi,- the reason is the latest Adobe Flash release:

http://help.geni.com/entries/20361586-names-displaying-vertically-i...

Just toggle the Ctrl key to make it look OK.

Bjorn, ah, the control key. Well that was easy. Now, if only the rest of the geni issues could be solved so easily. Thanks!

Judy

The writers below are right: GENI clearly made a radical move designed to corner some $$$, which will drive users away, thus compromising the validity of the so-called "Tree" (which is replete with errors despite everyone's best intentions), reduce overall the information that finds its way to the tree, and is therefore highly short-sighted and not in the interests of GENI or whoever the "parent company" is that's behind it. Reverse the changes, now !!!!

With the great help of Geoffrey David Trowbridge I have now another information to share.
Please be attentive!
When you now start the merge, the freeloader Average Joe is as helpless as without your help.
Even when the merge has been initiated by some higher power, I am still unable to finish it on my own.
I let this hanging merge hang there as a memorial to the stupidity!
And please do not bother to ask me to delete it or make it less private. Actually the oposite is happening as a protest the users in Estonia have been starting to lock down their trees just in order to avoid any PROs taking over their work by just merging themselves in, no questions asked.

How do I unmerge this one profile that doesn't match? I resolved conflicting data on about 20 profiles that had been merged to the main...the second one on this page is wrong (Jason's data).

Anita M. Boynton

I'm on iPad (holiday) and can't use Flash / tree view. But if you post a link in profile view I can take a look and suggest next steps.

Here is the profile, and a copy of the pertinent unmatching data.

Capt. William Carver

Manager Nancy Fetterly Jason Peter Herbert
Birth Date 9/6/1659 1671
Death Date 10/2/1760 1/18/1715

Erica Howton aRe you able to access more info than I am? When I click on the profiles from the revision list it just opens a conflicting data box...but nothing concerning relationships, only data.

If you don't have something that shows parents, partners and siblings before the merge, I think it would be a great enhancement to provide that somwhere/how, don't you?

The previous relationships not show to me either. We need to find outside sources to figure this out.

I add sources to everything now!

If anyone wants to tackle this, three different profiles were merged into one, from what I can tell, not sure any of them should have happened.

Unknown Profile

And here is Jasper III, also wrong...he seems to have been merged with them as well. Jasper Blake

I am tired, going to bed and will try to find sources tomorrow. None of the profiles have any sourcing, and the only link provided anywhere is to a stone with a plaque that says "Blake 1650-1925" on it, so that is no help.

Erica Howton Jasper Blake and my William Carver are the same family...I will look for sources on both tomorrow.

I'm making a lot of progress in the Carver family. Work more on the Blakes.

Geoffrey Trowbridge (curator) wrote on the previous page:
"I truly hope that they haven't removed the ability for non-Pro users to ACCEPT merges. That would be a recipe for disaster."

I am not going to comment here on the second sentence. But in case it hasn't be clarified here yet: Yes I can confirm as a matter of fact that non-Pro users can no longer ACCEPT any merges.

I believe this profile is a zombie:

Lieutenant John Washburn, IV

Anne, he is not a zombie, black stripe across picture area. Another one of those lousy private profiles. Try contacting the manager.

Oh, right. Thanks for pointing that out. I hate that!

but that manager is a fake manager, claimed historical figure
Stephen Washburn (1766 - d.)

Thanks
