I had a family member erase some of an about me during the "restoration from the crash" time. How do I get the erased part back from revisions? I don't see a Restore button any more...is that a new setting or a crash issue?

Morand "Morris" Stampfler 1st change on 8/5.

Mike that seemed likely since a lot were familiar, but does not account for the fact that I had no permissions to work on any of them...except the handful of new ones from yesterday.

With respect to the issue Jessie mentions, I am finding that the add family members arrows are unavailable for any private profile. In order to add people I am having to temporarily mark them as public in order to add relatives, and then go back and mark them as private again. Irritating and time consuming.

Dear curators,
To clarify: All of the profiles I'm referring to are public and my problem starts at my fourth great grandparent level in ALL cases. This situation has not changed since last night. I have logged off and on, and cleared my cache. Examples:

fourth great grandmother(no arrows or buttons):
Jerusha Bruce

third great grandfather (functioning fine):
Christopher Bruce

So, is this just me? System wide?
Thanks,
Jessie German

Brant and others, I just released what I believe is the fix for the yellow arrows problem -- can you check again and let me know? Thanks!

I'm guessing that Mike Stangel and company need to address this issue if it's a new bug or side effect and that while a curator might be able to help temporarily, this is a temporary stopgap until the bug is fixed.

Has someone submitted a Help ticket with a link to an example?

Thanks Mike!
My yellow arrows, and corresponding buttons have come back.
Gracias,
Jessie German

Thanks Mike, yes the yellow arrows are now back for all profiles. However there is now another peculiar display issue showing up. I've uploaded a screen captures of what I see when I first go to a part of the tree: http://bgibbard.ca/Uploads/000.jpg.

On first going to a part of the tree all the names run in a vertical stripe down the page, instead of being horizontal and sticking within their boxes. However, as I pass the mouse over a box the text for that box fixes itself.

This is using FireFox 5.

I have this display issue too. It seems to have been triggered by the latest Adobe Flash upgrade.

I have it too -- the vertical stuff. Another issue that has been going on for quite a while (from before the crash) is that the merge resolutions don't work. Every time I try to resolve duplication or whatever, the next day, the issue is still there. I've really been trying to hang on, hoping that you would fix this stuff, and/or at least communicate about it and that doesn't happen. I had been recommending Geni to a lot of people; no more. If experienced users are having trouble with this, how do you expect new users to stick with it? There seem to be so many problems with Geni right now, that I am going to try to stop using it for a while. Let me know when the program is working properly.

Hi Judy sorry to hear you are having these issues you said
'Every time I try to resolve duplication or whatever, the next day, the issue is still there.'

Do you have an example of this.

Judy...just an FYI... if you mean resolving conflicting data, many times the manager needs to approve the change. You get a message in green that says the requested changes were sent to the manager. This is true even on your own branches of the tree if the profile is an active user.

Hi Anita,

You are right about the approval bit, however, I'm not getting that message. Sometimes they go away, but more and more I keep getting the same message that I have duplication in the tree for certain profiles ... even if the manager has to approve the change, the same profiles shouldn't keep appearing in my box as needing to be fixed. It's definitely some sort of bug ...

Angus,

Best example is Renee Nossel profile. (I added her, Renee joined, we merged the 2 profiles into one.) The program keeps her in the duplication box and wants to know if she is Dr. Renee or just Renee. I've tried making it both of these things, and it keeps popping up. I know Renee has to approve it (although sometimes with other profiles that's not the case), but it shouldn't keep popping up in my box. And that's not the only example, but that one has been going on forever.

Judy...until Renee approves the corrected data, it IS still a conflict. Some indicator that it has already been submitted would be nice, though.

Why don't you watch for one that you do NOT get the "needs approval" notice on but that comes back, and then post the link to that conflicted data page here in the discussions, then it can be looked at for you.

What the hell! Now I can not do a merge unless I am a member. Keep sending the merges to my merge center where they will pile up. I too am getting fed up like a lot of others.

It has been 2 weeks of nonsense. If you do not want people on Geni just send us an email. Don't be coy about it.

Hi everyone, please see our blog post about today's changes here:

Also, please continue to use this discussion for Curator requests, and use the discussion I linked to for feedback on the new Pro/Basic permissions.

Thanks,
-George

it looks like you can add family members if they are below your 4th grandparents. i can't add any kids to my public 4th great-grandparents even if i added them to the tree in the first place and nobody else shares them. (the 4th great-grandparents that is). :(

lizzie i do and did and people are still going geni because they have found the profiles i have added

Private User, I've put a curator note on it as a temporary fix. I'll also pass the word along that it's seeking a home with a curator.

George said it well in his initial blog..."Non-Pros can no longer add new profiles to the historical tree or merge profiles. By making these permissions more consistent, we ensure that anyone who can add a new profile to the historical tree can immediately merge it with any existing duplicates. These changes will benefit all of us as the world family tree continues to get bigger and better." It does not matter how you spin it George, you are either insulting the intelligence of a lot of people or as a marketing guy just trying to make money, or both.

As the permissions for merging of profiles by free members has changed, could a curator please merge the following profiles:

Unknown Profile and Somerset Maugham
Unknown Profile and Syrie Maugham
Unknown Profile and Elizabeth Hope, Baroness Glendevon
John Hope, 1st Baron Glendevon and Unknown Profile

Thank you

Done.

Thank you.

Would you also be able to do:

Unknown Profile with Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome

Done.

PLEASE HELP US TO REVERT THE NEW POLICIES ESSENTIALLY BANNING THE FREE ACCOUNTS!

As of today the merging for normal dumbusers of Geni has been made impossible.
Just as a proof of concept I tried to emulate the dumbuser's modus of operandi, and added to my father my mother again: Unknown Profile
Don't worry, you should not be able to see a thing, the profile is private by default! She is accounted as my stepmother. This is false, and if I try to mend my move by trying to merge this profile with my mother's profile Milvi Pajula which I do not have any direct managing rights, but my brother, and son do, and I even have a collaboration with them (just in case), and ideed I am her rather close relative. BTW, this profile is not privat.
And what is the result of my merge effort? I am unable to initiate this merge!
" What is this? Am I a chopped liver? This Geni just does not work!" Logout!
And that's the last time you see this dumbuser to log in, but he did leave a private profile to hang there, plus probably there is also users own profile which nobody can touch for next 9 months.

Arne Pajula.... were you able to merge profiles as you described above a week ago? I wasn't able to when I was a non-Pro.

OMG Anita M. Boynton what do you mean? I realy have no clue how many profiles I did merge even yesterday, probably about 20 - 30 collaborator merge requests did land into my merge center yesterday. Of these about 20 I was able to merge, and the rest turned into seconding the requests.
Today I can not merge my mother. This is a joke! A cruel one...

Sorry Arne...before I went PRO, which was a year ago, I couldn't merge anything..no stacking, no approving, couldn't even look at merge issues... so that was why I was asking if it was something you could do before...they obviously changed some of the non-Pro capabilities after I went Pro.

I had a Pending Merge hanging for a very long time. My version Private, other one Public. Finally, yesterday, pressed "Accept" -- all it got me was an Ad for Pro.

Sent request to the Manager of the other Profile to take over Management - she did, now I manage both of them - tried again - again, just Ad for Pro.

Changed the other Profile to Private - now two private Profiles that I manage, with Pending Merge - clicked Accept - again, just got Ad for Pro.

Be aware the Non-Pros can no longer help you out here by accepting your requests to Merge!
