Today we're happy to announce a new addition to our Name Preferences that allows users to add metadata such as Tribe, Royal House, DVN, "GRanDMA OnLine" number, etc wherever names are displayed on Geni. This removes the need to add such information to the Suffix fields and gives everyone greater flexibility with how they want to view profile information on the site. Read more about it here:

I think geni just jumped to the head of the class of collaborative trees with this innovation. I predict it might be slow to take off, but that those who use it, will love it, as I think I do already. Adding database elements enriches biography and our understanding of a profile.

Try it!

This is great work! The software engineering behind it could not have been easy.

There is going to be one crucial piece to making this work well. We have to collaboratively stick to the same Label names for the same custom facts.

This sounds very useful. Thank you so much for making Geni better.

My first thought is, can this feature be used to save cross-references to other systems besides De Villiers, the information that would be in an RFN field in a GEDCOM file, e.g.

FamilySearch Person ID: G7WR-X3B

(meaning https://www.familysearch.org/en/tree/person/details/G7WR-X3B )

Find a Grave Memorial ID: 127012156

(meaning https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/127012156 )

but this isn't ideal for FRNs with multi-part ids, e.g. ancestry.com has tid AND pid:

https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/120078973/person/2...

Agree. Right now I have a much too long drop down list to prune.

Let’s use pages attached to the “Naming conventions” project to agree on standard terminology.

I’m about to start one for Naming Conventions - Military as this is huge in American genealogy.

Also, geni can write scripts to move numbers from name fields to attribute fields. We just need to define labels for them, and we’ve already been worrying about best name for Find A Grave. Their full name name is

Find A Grave Memorial ID

Is that too long on tree view?

For Immigration we have mostly used Immigration to xxx

To save us doing a lot of data entry Geni programmers are doing some work to move existing data to the new labels.

Re Find A Grave Memorial ID

Yes too long - A lot of users have already used Find A Grave or FindAGrave
