Hi, everyone,

You may have noticed that Geni's Inconsistency Checker has still been flagging some military titles and abbreviations as inconsistencies even though they are correct.

Geni's general manager just confirmed to me that he has updated the Inconsistency Checker to accept all of the official Department of Defense-approved abbreviations for written communications, which means all of the following are now accepted and should be the preferred options for that field:

  • Gen.
  • Lt. Gen.
  • Maj. Gen.
  • Brig. Gen.
  • Col.
  • Lt. Col.
  • Maj.
  • Capt.
  • 1st Lt.
  • 2nd Lt.
  • Sgt. Maj.
  • Chief Master Sgt.
  • Command Chief Master Sgt.
  • Command Sgt. Maj.
  • 1st Sgt.
  • Master Sgt.
  • Sgt. 1st Class
  • Tech. Sgt.
  • Staff Sgt.
  • Sgt.
  • Cpl.
  • Spc. 4
  • Spc. 3
  • Spc. 2
  • Spc.
  • Pfc.
  • Pvt.
  • Senior Airman
  • Airman 1st Class
  • Airman
  • Adm.
  • Vice Adm.
  • Rear Adm.
  • Cmdr.
  • Lt. Cmdr.
  • Lt.
  • Lt. j.g.
  • Ensign
  • Master Chief Petty Officer
  • Chief Petty Officer
  • Petty Officer 1st Class
  • Petty Officer 2nd Class
  • Petty Officer 3rd Class
  • Seaman
  • Seaman Apprentice
  • Seaman Recruit
  • Chief Warrant Officer 5
  • Chief Warrant Officer 4
  • Chief Warrant Officer 3
  • Chief Warrant Officer 2
  • Warrant Officer
  • Master Gunnery Sgt.
  • Master Sgt.
  • Gunnery Sgt.
  • Lance Cpl.

(Sorry, I know the list jumbles each of the branches together, but the info is all there!)

You might still see some of these flagged as inconsistencies on existing profiles, but if you refresh the Inconsistency Checker, they should now go away. On new profiles, they should no longer be flagged.

Thanks, Geni!

I have also uploaded a PDF from the DOD's style guide at https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000214230368836&graph_node_id=project-9052&mode=tagged and tagged it to the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps projects as well. The table on the third page is a handy one to keep a copy of if you write a lot about military figures.

I know there are other abbreviations that get used for some of these within the military, but these are the ones meant for general audiences like here on Geni.

Ashley, I served 4 years in the Army back in 1967-71 and was a Spc-5, E-5. Now this rank doesn't exist anymore but when talking about old guys like me there were many Spec 5's and Spec 6's!

I was also a Specialist 5. It seems like you saying that Specialist 5 and 6 are no more. These designations should be included in the list indicated otherwise some people may be left out.

These are just the current ones, correct.

For past ones, if someone can find a comprehensive list, I can pass it on to Geni's general manager so he can make sure those are also not being flagged as inconsistencies.

If we don't find a comprehensive list of those past ranks, they can still absolutely be used -- we'll just have to keep using the option to ignore/hide the inconsistencies when they pop up. (That's what I did for a Technician Fourth Grade relative recently.)

A standard we certainly need to employ!

Timeline of US Army Enlisted Ranks, 1920 to Present

See the above link for Army ranks and corresponding pay grades. The other service branches haven't changed as much over the years but the good old Army just can't make up it's collective mind.
