Sir George Turnbull - Primary Sources for the Turnbulls

Hi not for Geoge but for his son Thomas Turnbull of Bedrule who was married to Janet ( who married Phillip Of Chester)

Thomas was born about 1520. He died about 1572.

According to Turnbull (2018), “Sir Thomas 1520 -1572, Baron of Minto, married Mary Kerr. Because of a later court case his 9 sons and daughter were named: William1541; Hector c. 1542; Thomas 1550; James 1546; Margaret 1548; Mark 1549; Patrick 1551; Andrew 1555; Robert 1558 and Walter 1560 -1623”.

His father was George Turnbull (1453-1522), and his mother was Janet Kerr (1445- ). They were married about 1480. George is noted at the Battle of Sclaterford, in 1513, when he rallied 700 Turnbull, Kerr, Scott and Douglas rievers and defeated Lord Dacre's army, reputedly some 5000 strong in the Rule valley. The Turnbulls became a notorious Border Reiver clan seated at Bedrule Castle situated a few yards north east of the current Bedrule Kirk, at Fatlips Castle atop Minto Crags, and at Barnhill Castle at the base of the same crags. History records that the Turnbulls could quickly put 500 reivers into the saddle for one of their forays. In 1513, following success at Flodden, Lord Dacre led an English army of 5,400 north through the Rule Valley for further assault on a stricken nation. George Turnbull quickly rallied 700 Turnbulls, Kerrs, Douglases, and Scotts and defeated the invaders in the battle of Sclaterford
