CARNES GRAVES AT WAXHAW, SC PRESBYTERIAN CEMETERY
Friday 22 OCT 1999, Betty and I went to the Old Waxhaw Presbyterian Churchyard, in Lancaster Co., SC. From US 521 go west on SC 5 1.2 miles to Old Hickory Rd. Go South on old Hickory for 3.7 miles, which is where the Church and Cemetery are located. There are two separate Carnes plots within the cemetery with Carnes tombstones spelled several different ways. PLOT 1 This is the order that the Carns graves are in within the Carns plot wiith the spelling copied exactly.
Charles Carnns d. 28 Dec 1815 30 yrs, 7 mos. b. 1785 Jul Calculated date, NOT on stone.
Catherine Carns d. 02 Apr 1804 19 yrs, 6 mos b. 1784 Oct Calculated date, NOT on stone. " wife of Alexander Carns Jr.; daughter of John Foster"
William Carns d. 24 Nov 1807 31 yrs b. 1776 Calculated date, NOT on stone son of Alexander Carns
Alexander Carns d 2 Dec1814 75 yrs b. 1739 Calculated date, NOT on stone
Rebecca Carns "wife of Alexander Carns married 43 yrs, 77 days = m 1771, Calculated date, NOT on stone
PLOT 2 Alexander Carns b. 1708 d. 1774 David Carns b. 1733 Robert Cairns b. 1742 d. 12 OCT 1801
From this cemetery data it is very likely that Alexander b. 1708 is the father of
David b. 1733,
Alexander (of plot 1) b. 1739 and
Robert b. 1742
which matches information in the MEMOIR of William D. Carnes by Joseph Malcom Carnes Combined with the Genealogy of the CARNES FAMILY by William W. Carnes, published by G. L. Carnes Beaumont Texas in 1926.It states that It is a tradition of the Maryland branch that a family of three brothers and one sister came to Baltimore from Ireland and then came south to North and South Carolina. The Memoir does not mention anyone by name in Plot 2, only Alexander (Jr) b1739 and his children of plot 1, These Carnes were Scots Irish Presbyterians.
It should be noted that there was a Frederick Carnes in SC who made a will with different children. Both were in Rev War.
