We have some profiles that have been in this project for many years, but for which we've never been able to find any genealogical support for the person having Native American ancestry.
At this point, it's not really appropriate to keep profiles in this project and assign people Indigenous identity if our best source is an uncited BuzzFeed list or something like that.
So, I'm going to remove some of those "maybe they're Native but we're not actually sure" profiles, but I'm going to also post them in this thread, along with whatever information I can find about why we originally thought they should be added. Maybe we can then work on figuring out which ones should be added back.
Per Wikipedia: "In his autobiography, Brown stated that he had Chinese and Native American ancestry and that his father was of mixed African-American and Native American descent, while his mother was of mixed African-American and Asian descent."
Per Ethnicelebs: "James had stated that his paternal grandfather was 'pure Indian, a Cherokee,' and that his mother’s ancestry had a 'strong Asian element and some American Indian.' James had stated that his maternal grandfather was 'highly Asian,' and that his maternal grandmother's mother was 'almost a full-blooded American Indian.' It is not clear if these claims of Native American and Asian ancestry have been verified/documented."
We've tried to find info matching the above, as have other researchers, with no luck. There's a Brown family association that disputes the paternal grandfather claim. Maybe something on the maternal side?
If someone sorts it out and determines he should be added back, please let me know!
