broad serches seem to connect Anna with Gertrude Anna Kluesner
especially since John Schulte married Anna Guesner (sic) in Iowa. The match is that John was form Ohio and Getrude married her husband in OH... That's a host of coincidences that make this theory wortth considering.
this last post (Michael M.van Beuren © C

There is at least one ancestry dot com tree which records Anna Mariska's maiden name as Munger.
I will now suggest and edit for Anna on findagrave https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/15468150/anna-mariza-fitch
To correct her maiden name
The status as we have it now:
A mistaken maiden name of Schulte (aka Schultz) is a common contention. This is because Anna Mariska's first husband's surname was Schulte (aka Schultz). Ancestry dot com records show her marriage to John Schultz in Iowa. The 1860 census of San Francisco shows this couple living with Anna's mother., then (Mrs.) Eliza Corry. This Eliza married twice, first to a Mr. Munger. Anna Marisja was a child of that union.
Further complicating things, the rudimentary record of the Schultz/Munger wedding (mistakenly?) transcribed Anna's name as "Anna Guesner" (sic)
Further Note:
The (surname) <Munger> is one known in Iowa 1850 =/- 10 years
Norton Munger
1816–1851
BIRTH 1816 • Mungers Mills, Lewis, New York, United States
DEATH 1851 • Keokuk, Lee, Iowa, US
Parents

Norton's spouse: note.. not Eliza ! but seh was born in Addison County VT (!!)
Helen M Hamblin
1825–1909
BIRTH MAY 1825 • Bridport, Addison, Vermont, USA
DEATH 1909 • Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA
siblings of Norton Munger:
Fitch Munger 1818–1866 (not a candidate husband for Eliza (married Mary Summers
Harriet Munger 1820–1862
Jane Munger 1822–1899
Nathan Munger 1824– (no death, no marriage given) possible husband of Eliza, the future Mrs. Corry of SF in 1860)
Charles R Munger 1834–1868
The reason for the double exclamation points of the last post for Helen Hamblin is : Our Anna Mariska was born in Addison County Vermont... this would suggest that her mother Eliza (MNU) and her father first name unknown Munger have some connection to the <Hamblin> name.
Might Helen be Eliza's sister?cousin? or sone such relationship?
There are many early Hamblin burials in Addison County VT:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/search?firstname=&middlename=&l...
If Eliza was one: We know her birth date from the 1860 CA, USA census. It's c. 1811. There are at leas three Hamblins of close birth years in Bridport cemteries:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/55253455/alonzo-hamblin
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/46106439/david-k-hamblin
the second leads us to :
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/55247359/polly-ferre as well, Alonzo's sister
the parents being:

Switching gears: Let's look closely at ELiza Corry's household in SF (1860)
Her supposed child Mary F. Munger was born in VT in c. 1839. Subsequently her next known child, Charles Corry, was born in Indiana in 1851. This suggests that the first husband, FNU Munger died in the interim.
Consulting findagrave we find at least two Munger men who died in Indiana during the interim:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/89628214/john-munger
&
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/83879735/phillip-munger
This last has 'known' children:
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/83879793/kellogg-munger
(1813-1873)
&
https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/83892760/samuel-m-munger
(1826-1899)
both of unknown places of birth.
To be applicable to Anna Mariska Fitch Samuel would be a candidate broth if he was , like Anna, born in VT.... (I shall start looking)
adding Anna Mariska's supposed mother to the mix: Eliza Corry (Turner ?)
She once lived in Indiana in the 184x-185x time frame during which time she was, for a while, a widow. We do not see her recorded as a single mother head of household with a son and two daughters... (darn!)
but there is Huldah who is the right age...30-39 at
https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/8057/?name=_Munger&coun... but Huldah is not close to being 'Eliza'
I had sent the Nevada HS researcher an email: Patti Bernard Replies
"Hi Mike, Thanks for writing. We enjoy getting comments from our readers.
Anna, undoubtedly, is not Schultz, but that is her only documented name that we have. There is no definitive Munger documentation to Eliza, and thus to Anna M, from sources that we used... and we utilized every source that we could find, including Geni. Mary Frances Carpenter used the maiden name "Munger" on her marriage certificate. She was living with Anna then. It looked, perhaps, that they might be sisters-but again, no documentation of the name could be associated back to Anna.
Although we use census and newspapers as supporting documentation, we consistently look for more accurate primary sources such as birth, baptism, or marriage docs-realizing those might not be entirely accurate, either. If there were some bible records, baptismals, church records, etc., those sources were not shown on any of Anna Marik/sa's family trees, so that their research could be replicated, even on Geni.
The Ancestry family tree on Thomas H Fitch lacks information/documentation on marriages, as well, and by that association relates to Anna.
The Geni documentation on John Schultz gives a marriage date of 4/29/1860 that was then flagged "in error". The only known marriage documentation: The 5 Jan 1863 Sacramento Daily Union newspaper "Married:" Anna M Schultz was married to Thomas Fitch on January 1st in San Francisco.
As stated, the 1860 S.F. Census entry gives individuals that look to all be related, and we are sure they are-But how? We just don't know how. The fact that Eliza Corry appears with Anna on the 1860 & 1870 census years tells us something. And that on a 1880 census, Eliza Cory shows up with Anna Carpenter as a "mother-in-law when she had to be a mother-in-law to someone when Anna was only 4 then.
But, then, AnnaCory disappears. Death documentation is abysmally absent on any of them to ascertain relationships-what was her maiden name? Information on deaths of several other Elizas show up on Ancestry, but further digging into their information then eliminates them. So, how many marriages did Eliza have? Who was Anna's father? Still unknown.
We sat on this bio for over 2 years trying to find direct documentation on a longer timeline that utilized at least 2 reliable corroborating sources for pertinent information. Is she Anna a Munger, or not? We were unsuccessful in proving it one way or the other. Basically, we wanted to publicize her achievements, and because we found her early history to be so murky, we decided to key in from that timeframe of 1860 on.
We are definitely interested if you can come up with any documentation that can clear up some of these mysteries. I, myself, have gone though all the pages of ancestry entries Vermont and New Hampshire for Coreys/Mungers relating to our folks (numerous times). I did see where Charles L Corry and Bollen/Rolin Corry were related, and their mother was a Eliza Corry Turner. But I couldn't run the relationship back to our Eliza.
So good luck hunting. Maybe we're missing some kind of simple clue. If you find something definitive, please let us know and we'll update the new information.
Best,
Patti Bernard, NWHP researcher"
From this we take it that Anna Mariska mother's maiden name is Turner
Hi Patti, Thank for your reply.
I hava couple of comments.
• As Anna Mariska's mother was b. c. 1811 and Mary Carpenter née Munger was b.c. 1839, I am supposing that Mary is Anna's younger sister.
• As far as far as "The Geni documentation on John Schultz gives a marriage date of 4/29/1860 that was then flagged "in error"." goes... I see that this is an error..
Looking at ancestry dot com's doc.:
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/3863391:60284?tid...
Marriage: Apr 29 1860
Harrison, Iowa, USA
Husband: John Schultz
Wife: Anna Guesner (Schultz)
John and Anna then show up in the 1870 census in Iowa w/ children
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/41431746:7163
• as for what you wrote:
"I did see where Charles L Corry and Bollen/Rolin Corry were related, and their mother was a Eliza Corry Turner. But I couldn't run the relationship back to our Eliza."
Might you have a reference for this surname "Turner"?
I earmark one Turner burial of interest in Addison County.. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/22034807/oliver-turner
• of more that passing interest: In her youth, Anna was a ward of Gen. Edward Dickinson Baker (USA), US Senator ( citation )
I'll keep at this from time to time.
Thanks for your help.
I am currently reading both "Better Days" and Anna Mariska's work of 1870, which is far more interesting.
Have you seen this piece found on newspapers dot com?

The Weekly Arizona Miner

It a transcription of a speech T. Fitch gave in Prescott
It is how I backed into the Anna Mariska story.
I thought you might find this interesting as T. Fitch had this speech recorded on one of the early Thomas Edison machines... Leaving us to wonder if Anna ever did..

BIRTH

Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont, USA
DEATH
27 Feb 1844 (aged 52–53)
Shoreham, Addison County, Vermont, USA
BURIAL
Lake View Cemetery
Shoreham, Addison County
Note: Anna Mariska was born in Shoreham in c. 1833 and her mother Eliza was born in VT c. 1811
Might Eliza have been Charles' daughter?
Now let's follow the Corry line of questioning. I ask myself how many Corry families lived in Addison County Vermont, were well-educated and then moved to Illinois, Married and had a child there named Charles L. Corry in 1851? I include well-educated as Anna Marizba's mother Eliza Corry was probable well educated like her... vis the books Anna Marizba wrote...
I write this now as I've identified a Corry family. I begins with David Cory, Ill who removed to Addison County when his son Dr. Luther Cory was a few months old.
Both Luther (1789-1850) and his brother Zopher (1783-1860) moved to Kane Co., IL in later life.
On top of this: Luther, Zopher, other sibs, and their parents lived in Bridport.
Anna Marizba was born in Bridport c. 1833; her mother was born in VT c. 1811.
So..of the two know sons of David Corry (Luther & Zopher) who are their sons, for they are candidate partners of Eliza (Mrs. Eliza Corry of S.F. 1860)?
But there is another Luther Corry who lived in Addison County in 1820 who had a son the right age to be a husband of Eliza Corry b. 1811:
Name: Luther Corry
Home in 1820 (City, County, State): Shoreham, Addison, Vermont
Enumeration Date: August 7, 1820
Free White Persons - Males - 10 thru 15: 1>>>>>> could be him or
Free White Persons - Males - 16 thru 25: 1>>>>>> could be him
Free White Persons - Males - 45 and over: 1 = Luther (born before 1776
Free White Persons - Females - Under 10: 1
Free White Persons - Females - 45 and over: 1 = ?
Number of Persons - Engaged in Agriculture: 2
Free White Persons - Under 16: 2
Free White Persons - Over 25: 2
Total Free White Persons: 5
Total All Persons - White, Slaves, Colored, Other: 5
The mother of the sons here would be: Sarah Corey
and the sons:
Benjamin Franklin Cory
&
Hiram Freeman Cory ...
but she is also said to have a third son:
Calvin Cory who has vague dates and no documentation.
If I had to guess ... Maybe there is another son or step son
A general comment about population in 1820 Addison County: The communities of Shoreham and Bridport were sparsely populated... eg. Shoreham had fewer that 300 families...
On a sep. topic: One explanation for a lack of marital info on Eliza Corry (Turner ?) may be because of the then popular Free Love movement, one that did not last for long but was prevalent in many rural communities.
See, for instance https://www.geni.com/projects/Battle-Axe-Sect-The-Free-Love-Movement-in-Pennsylvania/4490329
(I realize this is big stretch)
Finally!!!! > a breakthrough:
I searched specific to Mary Munger using just her name and age anywhere in the US in 1850.
Here's what got:
1850 United States Federal Census
Indiana
Miami
Washington
https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/2117528:8054?tid=...
Caleb Cory 56 b.NY
Betsy Cory 43 b.VT <<< This is the same as Eliz. ten years later in SF
Ann Cory 19 b,VT<<< Ann is he implied daughter
James Cory 15 b.VT (mason) << James is an implied son
Elizabeth Cory 13 << Eliz is an implied daughter
Wm Cory 11 implied son is an implied son, b. VT
Janet Cory 5 implied dau., b, VT
Sendol B Morgan (sic) 21 = Sendol B. Munger B. (b. VT)
Mary Morgan (sic) 12 = Mary Munger (b.VT)
Miles Huffaker 48 "M. Clergyman"
The record crosses a page break
So: Mary Francis Carpenter has to be detached as a dau. of Eliza (Betsey) and Anna Marizba's maiden name becomes Corry as she is a child of Caleb's
This thread is now drawing to a close for me... We've established that Anna Mariska's father was Caleb Corry tet we don't know what became of him... (last seen in Miami Co., IN (1850 census)
