Hey there, it's Ann Guthrie from the Guthrie DNA Project and Guthrie Genealogy: Guthrie Ancestry and Genetic Genealogy site.

Over the past week I have been at Geni to fix some ancestor identity issues that were merged into my line, and have also noticed similar issues with many colonial Guthrie families. Being able to share and merge trees through a collaborative system is potentially a very good thing, but it can also easily lead to merges that are based only on user-submitted trees. If those trees have legitimate, docuemted ties to one another a merge may be appropriate, but there are many cases it is not. So, I have been untangling errors and offering up some research and DNA-based findings to those of you with some obvious tree errors.

I cannot tell you the identity William Guthrie who died in Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware, prior to his arrival in America, but I can tell you that he is definitely not Rev. William Guthrie who married Agnes Campbell.

The dates you have listed for "Reverence William C. Guthrie" born c1710 Antrim, Northern Ireland and died Jan 1775 MCH, NCC, DE do belong to the correct ancestor. The photo that is attached to your tree is that of Rev. William Guthrie 1620-1665 who married Agnes Campbell. He is otherwise commonly known as Rev William Guthrie, Minister of Fenwick. He lived and died in Scotland. His story is well document. Yes, his wife was Agnes Campbell. They had a large family, but all of their sons are known to have died young without heirs. Only 2 female lines survived and are documented. This man was the son of James Guthrie, Laird of Pitforthie, and his wife Janet Lyon of Easter Ogle. This man never lived in Ireland, nor did he come to America. He did have a son named William who was born 1653 and died in Fenwick, Ayrshire, 18665. You can read some basic info at the Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Guthrie_(minister)

The group also has a second wife listed for "Reverence William C. Guthrie" namely Margaret Legat. I can tell you that there is no 2nd marriage for the Rev William Guthrie, Minister of Fenwick, who married Agnes Campbell, so the question for you is whether you have any information identifying Margaret Legat as the wife of William Guthrie who died 1775 in Mill Creek Hundred, DE.

William Guthrie Sr (MCH, DE) died leaving a will that mentions, but does not name his wife. It does identify his children: Alexander (1736-1810), William (1744-1807), James (1750-1841), Adam, Margaret, and Mary. I don't know when the last 3 were born, but they all died sometimes after being named in their father's 30 Dec 1774 will.

Consider that (as far as I know) there is no evidence your ancestor William Guthrie Sr (MCH, DE) was born outside of Ireland. The family reportedly came to America from County Antrim, Ireland.

The marriage of William Guthrie and Margaret Legat occurred in Paisely, Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland on 2 June 1737. "Wm Guthrie & Margt. Legat were booked for proclamation in order to marriage." There is no notation of William's occupation or residence, nor of Margaret Legat's father's name.

This is in approximately the right time period since the MCH William's eldest son Alexander was born about 1736, but reportedly in Ireland. Looking at the Old Parish Records of Scotland, William Guthrie and Margaret Legat had the following children baptized:
1) Janet Guthrie born 4 and bapt 6 Aug 1738 at Abbey, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland
2) William Guthrie born 6 and bapt 13 Apr 1740 at Low Church, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland
They are the only 2 birth/baptisms recorded in Scotland for this couple. It does show this couple was in Scotland at least through 1740.
Looking forward at the OPR Marriage records, there are none between 1750-1780 for William. There are 2 in Renfrew for women named Janet, both in 1772, and both to men of similar surname named Walter, so it may be the same couple recorded at his parish and hers on separate dates. This is a typical practice in Scotland when the couple comes from different parishes. The marriage gets recorded in both books.

7 June 1772 Port Glasgow:
Walter McKechney, shipcarpenter in P.G. and Janet Guthrie daughter to Will. Guthrie farmer in the parish of Greenock.

27 Aug 1772 Greenock Old or West:
Walter McKinny ( __ in Port Glasgow and Janet Guthrie in this parish were booked in order to marriage.

If this is indeed Janet Guthrie, daughter of William and Margaret (Legat) Guthrie, which is not conclusive, then it shows this family was most likely still in Scotland at a time William Guthrie of MCH is already in Delaware.

There is nothing wrong with leaving William Guthrie Sr as your earliest proven ancestor until other genetic evidence or documentation provides more clues.

The following are couples whose descendants match the genetic profile of Guthrie Family Group 6.
Researching them may provide some clues.

Hi Ann Guthrie

Thank you for your detailed and important post. I’m tagging a few members who have worked on the Guthrie tree to come see it.

I removed the wrong image from William Guthrie, of Mill Creek Hundred

Diana Jeanne Guthrie - you entered the profile for Agnes Campbell & her parents, Agnes Campbell.

Do you have sources for these entries?

Yes. The Guthrie-Legat marriage and family info comes directly from the National Records of Scotland Old Parish Records. The information on Rev William Guthrie. Minister of Fenwick, comes from multiple sources, which I can gather tomorrow. Specific research sources on William Guthrie of MCH De also come from multiple sources. I can work on a list. The lineages mentioned that are genetically related to to the Delaware line are sourced from the Guthrie DNA Project.

The profile for Reverend Mr. William Guthrie, Minister of the Gospel at Fenwick looks pretty good to me?

We definitely need help on the Milll Creek family …

Earlier today I had added on to the tree that includes a project member and created my own William Guthrie Sr (IRE/DE) before finding the one for Rev. William C. Guthrie.
William Guthrie, of Mill Creek Hundred

It has a lot of ABOUT me information as well as some basic data on his unnamed wife.

I had planned to merge mine into this one after discussing everything with the profile manages, but I suppose you can do that. Many of the first generation children have my ABOUT notes added as well. They are really a timeline, but I figured putting them in the ABOUT section would at least make them easier to see before moving anything into the timeline section.

Personally I love notes in the “about.”

I’ll go ahead with the merge, then people can focus on the kids.

That went smoothly.

I’m detaching as wife Agnes Campbell and the children attached to her:

John Guthrie

Jane Guthrie

Sarilda "Sarah" Starkey

Thomas Guthrie

Isabella Guthrie

Hopefully new places in the tree for them will be found and they can be merged into place. None of them have children attached.

Look for Guthrie Family Group 6 and its associated lineages for collected research data and DNA project findings.

Here is the summary info on those other GFG6 matches:

GUTHRIE-UNKNOWN (MCH-DE)
William Guthrie was born in Northern Ireland about 1710. His wife’s name is unknown, as is his year of immigration to America. The family settled in the area of Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. There are multiple participants from this line in GFG6, and a couple of others who resided in MCH that are potentially descendants of William Guthrie.
GUTHRIE-UNKNOWN (PA)
The first two generations of this participant’s lineage need some detailed research. Stated ancestors are William Guthrie, born 1738 in Ireland, lived in Pike Run, Washington, PA, married to Margaret_______. Their son James Guthrie, 1759 Ireland – 1860 IL married Mary_____. Legitimate documentation begins with the next generation: George Guthrie 1782 Ireland – 1856 Illinois & Margaret Keys. This Guthrie branch appears to have immigrated to America between 1783-1814, settled in Washington County, PA, and in 1854 moved to Sidell, Vermilion County, Illinois.

GUTHRIE-NESBIT (ENG)
Our participant is an Englishman born in Lancashire, so the entirety of his traceable lineage is also in England going back to Adam Guthrie & Elizabeth Nesbit who married in Berwick upon Tweed in Northumberland, England in 1761.

GUTHRIE-SHELPS (IRE/VA)
The “Widow Guthrie” arrived in America with 5 sons: John, Robert, Stephen, Truman, and James. Our participant for this lineage descends from son James Guthrie, born 1761 in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland and died 1833 in Preston County, Virinia, and his wife Mary Shelps. This family lived along Little Sandy Creek in Monongalia County, Virginia.

GUTHRIE-MENNION (SCT/RI)
George Guthrie was a farmer in Berwickshire, Scotland who married Janet Mennion. The family remained in Scotland for several more generations and our participant’s branch moved to Rhode Island during the 1900s.

GUTHRIE-MUNSON (NY)
James Guthrie 1775CT-1850NY married Editha Munson. They lived in Hebron, Washington County, NY, and later moved to York, Livingston, New York, where he died in 1850. James might have been the son of John Guthrie and his wife Phebe MNU. The parents’ identities are unconfirmed.

GUTHRIE-STINSON (IRE/ONT)
John Guthrie was born 1791 in Ireland. He immigrated to Canada sometime before 1822. We do not know if it was directly from Ireland to Ontario, or if his family had immigrated to America first before settling in Canada. John’s wife was Isabella Stinson. They marred 25 Apr 1822 in York, Ontario, Canada. John built a house in Whitby Township, Durham, Ontario, Canada in 1844.

GUTHRIE-FANSEY (PA)
James Guthrie was possibly the son of Thomas Guthrie who lived in Lycoming County, PA and was listed in the 1800 census for Muncy Creek, but not in 1810. On 15 May 1811 a 6-cent reward was offered for a 2-time runaway, a bound boy named James Guttery.  At about 16-18 years of age, he married Martha Fansey. Their son Joseph Jones Guthrie 1829-1905 & wife Susannah Andrews are our project participant’s ancestors. This family continued to live in Lycoming County, PA.

GUTHRIE-ROBINSON (MD/MCH-DE)
Benjamin Guthrie was born in Maryland in 1820. His marriage to widow Sarah (Robinson) Satterfield took place in New Castle County, Delaware in 1839. The family lived in White Clay Creek and Mill Creek Hundred, DE for several decades. Later generations of the participant’s line moved to PA.

GUTHRIE-BORDREAU (PA)
Thomas Justice Guthrie aka Justice Oliver Guthrie was born on 1 Jul 1874 in Pennsylvania, possibly in Bellefonte, Center County. He was listed in the 1880 census of Graham, Clearfield, PA in the household of Henry & Martha Thomas, and listed as an “adopted son”. He married in 1895 to Nellie Bordreau, and their only son, Edward Lyle Guthrie is the direct ancestor of our project participant.

GUTHRIE-HOOPES (MCH-DE)
Our participant listed his ancestors as Samuel James Guthrie, born 1877 in Pine Creek, New Castle, Delaware, and Ella Hoopes. Research shows that Samuel’s parents were Benjamin F Guthrie 1841DE-1919PA and wife Elizabeth Turner, and grandparents Benjamin Guthrie 1820-1864 and wife Sarah (nee unknown) Saterfield. The latter couple lived in White Clay Creek and Mill Creek Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware. Benjamin was killed in action during the Civil war on 19 Aug 1864 on the skirmish line near Petersburg & Walden Railroad, VA.

I'll work on the source data for Rev. William Guthrie, Minister of Fenwick next.
