It seems to me that the spelling "Nicolson" for the birth surname of Margaret and several of her siblings is incorrect.
Have a look at the Sources tab, and the only spellings that I can find in the contents of the documents are "Nicholson"

Do you have any evidence for the "Nicolson" spelling?

James you are correct!

All the Nicholson family surnames were changed once the family settled in Australia.
Evidence for the original Nicolson spelling can be found on the following documents:
1. Marriage Certificate Murdoch Nicolson & Marion Macinnes S/R Marriages 117/10/153 (1854)
2. Birth Certificates of first two children ie Malcolm Nicolson statutory birth record 11//57 (1855) & Mary Nicolson statutory birth record 117/1 (1857) both born in Snizort, Isle of Skye.
Jame you may find the same type of issue with our McInnes family surname,
The reality is that the family surname spelling is interchangeable!
