This is the current link for the Y-chromosome West surname project. Does anyone know if any of the participants are a direct descendant of this William West? I'm trying to figure out with whom our William West is a match.

My great grandmother was Amanda West. A decendant of John West.

Hi Ramona, thanks for your reply. I'm also a descendant of John West. Do you know if any of John West's descendants have participated in the Y-chromosome West project on FamilyTreeDNA?

I think the best thing is for folks with DNA at FtDNA to connect but while that is still not an option, we can look at the tree and make sure each generation is proven going backwards and if there are any folks that have their Y connected now, it will show and can be used to confirm or to disconnect and look elsewhere.
THAT is the most difficult part of genetic genealogy... having to say good bye to a line that DNA says is incorrect

I agree, genetic genealogy gives us a definitive answer as to whether or not a perceived connection is actually true. Also, this being John West's profile, I meant to ask if there are Y-DNA participants of John West, not William West. Sorry for the confusion.

My 3rd Great Grandmother was Sarah West, her son was named William West Jeffers, which gives some reference that her father was named William, There is also Bartholomew Jeffers which may reference the Bartholomew surname, his son is another William West Jeffers. Several of Sarah;s grandchildren marry descendants of her siblings, validating that level somewhat. I've tracked several other profiles ancestors back to Sarah Pearson also, there's that. IDK any of the John West and his son Major William West of John Shea's 3rd Militia connection, nor his brother Benjamin West the American Painter. I'm surprised there isn't a historical society who already had this stuff figured out somewhere. These people are major historical figures and they are connected closely to the founders of the United States.

Thanks, Robert, for sharing your West connection. Agreed, the West family was quite prominent so it's surprising that there are still unknowns about them. I'm hoping that West surname project on FTDNA can help give us answers.

Hi Carl, I'm a direct descendant of John the Tavern Owner. I'm not on FamilyTreeDNA, perhaps I'll give it a go. My great grandfather Sylvan Owen West did a lot of research on our ancestry so I have bits and pieces here and there. I also have his and his sister Rose's memoirs. Any specific questions that you have?

I don't know why I didn't think about this before, but Jessica Biel was on "Who Do You Think You Are". She would theoretically be a descendant. She either got the truth or gypped, from this pro genealogy firm. I don't see how he can move much, his wife is connected by records to several different people by clear paths. 2.) All of my lines lead to the Noble Tribe (Nobles Marry Nobles). The one family that connects all of them is the Hatfields, specifically Joseph Andrew, his brothers line even goes back into the New Haven Colony to my 7th GGrandfather. His kids go to missouri and connect the Tate and Jeffers line through the Metcalfs. I have found no less than 5 cells of Wests with no clear direct path back to this line. There used to be two WIlliam Wests before my 3rd grandmother, last time I looked it was all messed up and impossible relations time wise between certain people. Anyway. I'm going back in. I corrected the Sharon Tate line it wasn't right, I corrected it with documentation back to her 4th (surname) GGF, many people missing, she's still a cousin, now 8 Couspeeps lie between Tate to Tate that's what I'm looking for.

@Brian West, thanks so much for your reply. You and I are distantly related as we are both descendants of John West the Tavern Owner. My specific question pertains to the direct ancestors of John West the Tavern Owner. We have a paper trail proving that he is from Long Crendon, Buckinghamshire, but nothing before that is proven. There is widespread belief that John West is a descendant of the de la Warr Wests, but I haven't seen any original sources proving this. The Y-chromosome project on FTDNA for the West surname is a game changer in that it could help prove or refute this claim. In general, it can also see how closely related we are to other Wests. Thanks again for writing and let me know if you have questions about the Y-chromosome test.

Kind regards,

Carl

Sorry Carl, just saw this message now. Will look into the Y-chromosome project.

No worries, cool!
