Kevin Alan de Lange says
Good day all,

When Johann Hinrich was employed by the VOC on the ship Immagonda, he was listed in the crew as "Jan Hendrik Lange" from "Oeltrop"
https://www.nationaalarchief.nl/onderzoeken/index/nt00444/c840cfda-...

The details of the voyage can be confirmed here: http://resources.huygens.knaw.nl/das/detailVoyage/94477

Johann Hinrichs father is listed as "Dirk Hinrichs" in "Die Familien der Kirchengemeinde Aurich-Oldendorf (1700-1900)"
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS81-RSDW-V

It is commonly accepted that the "Lange" was attributed to him as a result of his physical height, and that "de Lange" became his accepted surname, as is evidenced by subsequent baptisms of children he had with Aletta Lubbe. In these documents he is listed as "Jan Hendrik de Lange", or "Jan de Lange"
His children simply continued using the name "de Lange".

Sources are here: https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LYC3-654

The name of gf the SV is rather confusing given the source data I've provided above, as is the incorrect attribution of the surname "de Lange" to his father.

Another issue I would please like to get clarity on, is his death in 1805. I have scoured hundreds of slides on the Familysearch site, covering the entire Cape Province for the years 1797 to 1810, and could find no reference to his death being recorded anywhere in any registers. I can also not find any graves listed in South Africa on the EGGSA website. I have also followed a possible lead to the Island of St.Helena, but he was not listed there either.
Can anyone provide more info regarding his death for me please?

Particularly interesting is the deLange parents/grandparent attributed to him
cf Hinrich Martens Dircks

Someone, somewhere attributed the surname 'de Lange' to Dirk Hinrichs, and it has been copy/pasted across many platforms as people populate their family trees.
It's even on what I considered a reputable website, First 50 years: http://www.e-family.co.za/ffy/g5/p5097.htm

Does anyone have access to any of the cited sources?

Private can you access the primary sources on GISA for the father and grandfather's surnames?

Also, the picture loaded for this profile is not him, but is of Johannes Hendrik (Hans Dons) De Lange (8 December 1799 - 26 March 1861)
To the best of my knowledge, no photo exists of the Stamvader.

Which profile is Johannes Hendrik (Hans Dons) De Lange (8 December 1799 - 26 March 1861)? Can you post the link?

Sharon Doubell Please see inventory of his wife Aletta Lubbe on 27/2/1818. There it states she is the widow of Wylen Johannes Hendrik DE LANGE ( Jan normally the nickname for Johannes). That means he was already dead prior to 1818.

I am going to remove it.

A photo taken when he was alive !!
Amazing.
Or another Dutch connection from Amsterdam.

Hans Dons de Lange

He died 1861 and this photo a man of about 30 maybe 40 ? taken 1830 to 1840 ?
First photographs in SA about 1860.
So not very likely to have been of him !

Wow!

Thanks Judi
