I started building my family tree almost two years ago, there are more than 200 relatives in my tree. This is my family. Geni says that I am associated with more than 300 people. But I do not see the way to other people. What is the problem?

Hello.
Maybe because the 247 profiles in your tree are not duplicated elsewhere in the main geni world family tree?

Keep on searching.

All the best!

thank you for participating in my discussion and what you answered me, you are very kind.

You can try and look at https://www.geni.com/list/matches?filter=tree_matches and see if there are any matches there. If there are and they really are duplicates you can merge them or ask for help in merging them in https://www.geni.com/discussions/192543
If there are no matches yet you will may have to build your tree a little further back in history before there is a match.

I thank you for your help, but the matches do not really appear yet, although I reached my great-grandfather, I hope to see the matches over time and I can see the way to other people.
All the best.

Have you tried adding the equivalent English names? There is a facility within each profile to add other languages. My guess is that Geni is not very good at matching names using non-Latinate scripts unless it has a little help.

Thank you for participating in my discussion. I added names in English, but so far not for all profiles.🍀

Hi Maryna,

Regarding the discrepancy in numbers, I noticed you manage more profiles than are connected to your tree. I think one reason for this is profiles like Peter Shpinda Шпында -- he's not connected to anyone. (You must have added him using the "Create a Branch" feature) So there's no problem, just some profiles you created aren't counted in the "Family Tree" number.

There are no duplicates in Maryna's profiles; if they were she'd've been in the big tree years ago.

Yes, I create branches for my relatives, but so far I don’t know anything about their relatives and I don’t know how to bind them to my tree. For example, Petr Shpinda is my grandmother’s nephew, many years ago he went to America but I don’t know the name of his wife, and I don’t know whose son he was, since my grandmother Fenya Zhubryk (Goysan) had twelve brothers. But I do a search, ask my relatives and quietly add them to the tree. Although it is very strange that out of so many people in my tree I have not received a single tree match

8/23/2019 at 9:35 AM

Maryna Zhubryk your approach is fine, to create branches for people who you're not quite sure how they connect to your tree. Good luck!

Thank you very much for your help and support.

Maryna,
I come across this quite often - particularly where I know someone is the son of the father but he had 2 wives and I am not exactly sure which one is the mother.

for example for your grandmothers nephew I would
* add in a sibling to your grandmother called NN or unknown
* add in the nephew as their son
* in the profile overview I then say what I know about the unknown person - ie brother of Fenya, father of Petr, could be xxx, xxxx, xxx, xxxx

The advantage of this is that it will still show you your relationship to Petr and hopefully another member of your family might be able to provide the missing information some time down the track (or record matches or smart matches might provide it)

You will see this a lot in the tops of trees where someone is listed in historical documents as the grandchild of King xxx, or niece of King xxx but they do not specify the exact details.

I can help you to attach them to your tree if you want.

I have found the following passenger record for a Petras Szpinda b. 1886 en route to New York:

Birth Date: abt 1886
Departure Date: 21 Jun 1913
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England
Destination Port: New York, USA
Ship Name: Mauretania
Search Ship Database: Search for the Mauretania in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Shipping Line: Cunard Line
Official Number: 124093
Master: W T Turner

Also a US Public record for:

Fanya Zhubrak
Address: 1370 Valleyvista, Shermanoaks, CA, 91403
[1370 Valleyvista, Shermanoaks, CA, 91423]
[13707 Valley Vista Blvd, Van Nuys, CA, 91423-4345 (1993)]

Do you have other information about these two individuals - i.e. dates, places of birth, death etc that would help find more information?

I find it nearly impossible to connect non-Jewish Russians to the big tree. Even Boris Yeltsin's tree is disconnected.

No, it’s not them. Fenya Zhubryk (Goysan) was born in Poland in 1913, died in Ukraine, Peter Shpinda her nephew means he is even younger or the same age, he went to America, I think he was the son of one of the sisters Fenya Zhubryk (Goysan) , because in Russia and Ukraine women when they marry change their surname. If Peter were the brother’s son, then his last name would be Goysan as his father, that is, like his brother. I know that Fenya had 12 brothers and sisters together, she was the youngest in the family. So I did so, added a sister to Fenya to the tree, wrote Unknown Goysan + added Shpinda to the tree of Unknown is the sister's husband + added the child Peter Shpinda. After a while, I got a tree match in the tree. But I can’t see anything because I don’t have a Geni Pro subscription. And I don’t know what to do when a tree match appears?

my mother told me that the mother of my biological father is Jewish, but I know nothing about them except their names and date of birth.

Most Jews left Russia and married into big tree member families.

my biological father simply refused me, his parents wanted a rich bride for him, and my mother comes from a poor and large family. it happens in life.

9/4/2019 at 6:28 AM

I think why there are no duplicate profiles in the profiles in my family tree and I don’t understand. I have seen many trees since I registered on the Geni website and there are matches in all the trees and my tree has no matches. Why is this happening?

Because it's impossible for me to find sites that show lineages of Italians and lineages of Russians. People have been copying and pasting American and South African lineages for decades and they keep uploading GEDCOMS which reduplicate all these Americans and Dutch people but no one Russian or Italian ever does it.

please explain to me what it means to uploading GEDCOMs.I don’t even understand how to do it. If you explain to me, then I will try to do it. Thanks so much!!!

A GEDCOM is an standardised format for genealogical data that most genealogical programs can export to so that the same information can be important into another program (that also recognises that format).
Geni does now also allow to import data in this format.

Correct - because the concept of GEDCOM and knowing one's ancestry was frowned upon by Soviet policies where one is not supposed to look the past.

9/6/2019 at 12:54 AM

Private, I agree with your assessment that many people in the West research their family history and this probably less so for other parts of the world. I can't comment on the Soviet policies but it may also have to do with the availability and accessability of old records (and also Geni is a lot less accessible to people with non-western languages, especially if their script is different).
I think that using the word GEDCOM here is a bit of a red herring, because a lot of duplicates are created manually (the ability to import a GEDCOM is relative recent and before that we already had the challenge of many duplicates).
