The profile for Abraham Childers currently shows him with three wives, when he is only known to have had one. Two of them are named Elizabeth but do not appear to be duplicates. However Ann Adkins is a duplicate sister for the documented wife, Anne, and also has another duplicate sister named Elizabeth.
The profile for Ann has her first marrying Abraham Childers and then marrying Joseph Adkins. I haven’t seen direct documentation, but the will of Henry Pew (her father) names two daughters Jane Price and Anne Adkins, but no daughter named Elizabeth. It also mentions grandchildren Abraham Childers Jr, John Childers, Joseph Adkins, and Jane Childers.
There are too many children in Abraham’s profile, including five that don’t even have a name and obviously don’t belong here. Abraham’s will is available at https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=patchildress9... It says that his wife’s name is Anne and names the following children:
Abraham Junior
Henry
Philemon
John
Robert
The link says that daughter Jane had not been born yet at the time the will was written (1698) , but her existence is verified by the mention in Henry Pew’s will. Pew’s will was written in 1709. He doesn’t mention grandsons Henry, Philemon, and Robert, so they may have died before then.
There are two Abraham Childers III listed in the children that are half-brothers to each other. This one: Abraham Child appears to be a duplicate of Abraham Senior, since both are married to Elizabeth the daughter of Henry and Jane Pew.
The wife that clearly doesn’t belong to Abraham Senior Elizabeth Childers is shown as being married to both Abraham Childers II (aka Abraham Senior) and the Abraham Childers III that does NOT look like a duplicate of Abraham Senior and is apparently Abraham Junior.
My real concern in all this mess is for Mary Ann Howard the alleged daughter of Abraham Junior. It doesn’t look like she belongs here at all since she was born in Maryland. https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/146490296 gives her parents as Abraham Child and Elizabeth Cheney. So does https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Childress-111 but I’m not seeing any documentation.
There’s some documentation here for an Abraham Childers who married Elizabeth Cannon and had a daughter named Mary. But Mary’s birthdate is wrong to give birth to Abraham John Howard in 1725, and it says she was born in Henrico: https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=ann%5Fblomqui...
I’m not finding a lot of documentation, but https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/LYQS-B9X says there is a record of an Abraham Child arriving in Maryland in 1681.
I was just looking at a page on that site, and I'll look some more. I don't know what Abraham Childs did in Maryland, but the notes at https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I0885... show his name in the list of debts for several estates.
This is the Abraham Childress who married Elizabeth Cannon: https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I0900...
This is the one who's credited with being the father-in-law of Philip Howard: https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I0224... The notes aren't very clear but it looks like he left 206 acres to the son of Philip Howard. Apparently his wife's name is Eliza.
I take it back, the reference to Eliza was on someone else's will. Abraham was a witness.
Elizabeth Cheney isn't panning out as his wife. There are only two who are remotely in the right time frame, and they didn't marry him:
https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I0459...
https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I0528...
Looking at Matthew Howard, it says his wife's name was "Mary _____". So it's doubtful whether she was a Child at all. https://www.colonial-settlers-md-va.us/getperson.php?personID=I0687...
It also doesn't show them having a son named Abraham John Howard, so Susannah “Susie” Vance might have the wrong parents. She's the great-grandmother of Devil Anse Hatfield, so we're getting into "famous people" territory.
It's reasonably well documented that Susannah Vance was the daughter of Abraham Howard. Numerous sources like https://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=hagerj&id... say that Abraham's will mentions her name as Susanna Vance, but I can't find the actual will. http://wikigen.net/getperson.php?personID=I09896&tree=MASTER_TREE has some documents for Abraham but not the text of the will.
It also says that Abraham was the son of Philip Howard and Mary Child, without documentation. The Howards did move around, so it's possible that they had more children than the ones that show up in the Virginia records. But the best I can find for documentation is https://www.genealogy.com/ftm/h/o/w/Kenneth-H-Howard-III/GENE2-0005... which acts like it has lots of footnotes about sources but doesn't actually show them.
Update: the previous post mentions an internet claim that the will of Abraham Howard mentions Susannah Vance. I've learned that it's actually the will of Abraham's wife Jane Allen Howard that mentions her. From https://www.familysearch.org/tree/sources/sourceVE?&entityId=L6...
