I am looking for any descendants from Marblehead, MA. My 5 times great grandfather was Nathaniel Stone (1793-1871) from Marblehead, his son Thomas P. Stone (1819-1899) from Marblehead, son William T. Stone (1848-1937) from Marblehead, MA , son Fred F. Stone (1872-1952 from Marblehead, MA and son Walter Lufkin Stone (1899-1964) from Lynn/ Peabody Ma. Nathaniel Stone aeems elusive for the most part. I did find one record that connects him to the Almshouse in Marblehead and he was listed as a pauper at age 75. No death or birth records for him though. Any ideas?
Hi Kat,
Sorry for the late reply. I've been away from GENI and have been trying to catch up the last two weeks.
There are very few records of a stone family in Marblehead prior to 1800. There is no birth record for your Nathaniel Stone. But there is a marriage and death record for him:
Marblehed VR 412 Stone: Nathaniel, and Nancy Preble, Mar. 6, 1814. [Mar. 3. CR1]*
Massachusetts, Death Records, 1841-1915
Name Nathaniel Stone
Birth Place Marblehead
Death Date 9 Feb 1871
Death Place Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA
Mother Hannah Stone
Age at death 79 years, 2 month, 4 days.
Occupation: Laborer
If we take Thursday, February 9, 1871 and subtract 79 years, 2 months and 4 days we can determine that Nathaniel was born Monday, December 5, 1791. We know his mother’s name was Hannah Stone. Checking Marblehead Vital Records again we can find only one marriage of a Hannah to a Stone prior to 1800:
Marblehead VR 411 Stone: Joseph, and Hannah Ring, May 16, 1779.*
Joseph Stone born say 1758 married to Hannah Ring 16 May 1779. He died intestate and his widow Hannah was administrator of his estate on July 1, 1801. Joseph Stone’s probate file # 26701 shows his occupation was laborer which is the same occupation as his son Nathaniel Stone. His estate was valued at about $91 and his debts exceeded the value of his estate. Hannah (Ring) Stone died 12 Nov 1843 in Marblehead (Marblehead VR p 677 Stone: Hannah, wid., old age, Nov. 12, 1842, a. 80 y). Based on her age at death she was born approximately 1763. Looking at Nathaniel’s marriage record you can see within a year of his marriage an Isaac Stone and a John Stone where married. Also a Joseph Stone Jr was married in Marblehead. Investigation of other Stones of this period may lead to more facts about the family group of Joseph Stone. I would also go to FamilySeach.org and look up Stone in the grantor and grantee land records index for Essex County and see if there are any Stone deeds for this period. You may want to build a tree based on all Stone records from Marblehead prior to 1800 and see if you can fit them together.
Best regards,
