Managers of Magnus, II,

I am contacting you about this profile: Magnus, II.

According to the 'Scots Peerage,' Magnus II, Earl of Orkney and Earl of Caithness was the son of Gille Crist, 4th Earl of Angus and his second wife, Ingibiorg Ericsdottir of Caithness (daughter of Eric Thorliotsson).

[See Sir James Balfour Paul. The Scots Peerage: founded on Wood's edition of Sir Robert Douglas's, The Peerage of Scotland, (Edinburgh, Scotland: David Douglas, 1904), vol. 1, pp. 160-165.]

Since Marjory of Huntingdon (born 1152) married secondly, Sir William de Lindsay sometime between 1185 and 1200, Magnus II was obviously the son of Gille Crist, 4th Earl of Angus and his second wife, Ingibiorg Ericsdottir of Caithness. It is most likely that GIlle Crist's daughter, Bethoc of Angus was born around c. 1180, while he was still married to Marjorie of Huntingdon, and then had Magnus II around 1185, when Gille Crist was married to his second wife. Magnus II, Earl of Orkney would have lived about 54 years from 1185 - 1239. Which is a long life span for the early 13th century.

Magnus' first child, Gilbert I (born c. 1210) would put Magnus II around 25 years of age at Gilbert's birth. Which is very acceptable.

Magnus' half-sister, Bethoc of Angus, would have been born around c. 1180 and still be young enough to have any child born around c. 1218, where she'd be 38 years old. There are numerous examples of women in the 13th and 14th centuries having children in their early 40s. One example is Margaret de Bohun (born 1311 - 1391) who had her fifth son, (Sir Philip Courtenay (c.1355 – 29 July 1406), of Powderham, Devon), when she was about 44 years of age.

A date of birth of 1180 for Bethoc of Angus and a date of birth of c. 1185 for Magnus II, both children of Gille Crist, 4th Earl of Angus is very acceptable, as it is widely accepted that they both had different mothers.

Sincerely,

Kelly Murphy

How about competent and coherent replies to this post. Proper sources and explanations are given to justify the change in dates.

THe DOBs seem close enough to me, Kelly. Am I missing something? I'd even say that Bethoc's as it stands 1 January 1184 - seems too specific.

I've seen ranges for Beatrix's birth from 1174 to as late as 1184. Given that she was the daughter of Gill Crist, 4th Ear of Angus and Marjorie of Huntingdon, who married in the early 1170s, I'd say a birth date range of 1175-1180 would fit just fine. Her last known child is said to have been born circa 1218, making her 38-43 years of age at the birth of her last chlld, which is completely possible. Marjorie of Huntingdon has been said to have married secondly to Sir Walter Lindsay around 1184/5, that is why I question Beatrix's birth year as 1184!

Has been said isn't a specific enough source, but I'd definitely like to change the January date if there isn't a source for that.

Dates were not recorded necessarily for this time period for younger children, only the date of birth for the hereditary heir and first born son. That was Alexander Stewart, 4th High Steward of Scotland who was born 1214. We really don't have dates of births for her other children. Only historical estimates from Scottish historians over the centuries. My best estimate is that her youngest child was born before 1220, given all the other evidence.
