In cleaning up the infinitely recreated John of Gaunt profiles, I realized that we've got two Paon de Roets -- this one and Sir Paon de Roët

supposedly half brothers, both master profiles.

And one of them is father to the two sisters, Katherine Swynford and Phillipa de Roet (who married Chaucer).

Are there really two half brothers named Paon de Roet? did Katherine and Philippa really have two mothers?

Last time I looked these things were not so; I gather we've found new information but I'm having trouble unravelling it.

Anne Brannen I will help you. Send me the information that you have or the sources to not look those to find new ones.

I'm just looking at what is in the profiles.

I'm pretty sure the one I MP'd was soley from following a merge-chain up to (or down to!) that point.

Since both overviews reference the same Wikipedia article, I'd work on the assumption they are the same person; I'm removing my MP. The other one has a great overview.

Note that the Overview does cite the daughter linked to the other profile; the only question is really about the name of the wife ... an unknown (NN NN) vs. the claim of one daughter's mother as Catherine d'Avesnes

That would fix the Paon de Roet part, yay!

I've never heard a mother referenced for either Katherine or Philippa, but certainly there may be evidence of one.

I presumed full siblings, too. The only question is really if Lady Catherine is the mother, or an 'unknown'. (I'd lean towards the 'unknown'; linkage to Lady Catherine seems a bit "too convenient".)

The Roet family chart at http://www.stirnet.com/genie/data/british/qr/rzmisc01.php#roet (membership required to view without interruption; based on data from Anya Seaton's book "Katherine" and Alison Weir's book "Katherine Swynford") only mentions one Sir Giles/Paon/Payn. If he had a full brother or half-brother with the same given name, I'd expect those books to mention that brother as well - at least to distinguish the two from each other, if for no other reason.

Are https://www.geni.com/people/Sir-Paon-de-Roët/6000000003232563277?th... parents identified ?

I’m showing N.N. as descended from Attila the Hun, "Scourge of God", King of the Huns ?

This lady looks to be a respected researcher, and she is not sure of his line?

Here’s about N.N. from Jim Weber

https://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jweb...

Having checked several printed sources and the general internet for information on the mother of Philippa and Catherine de Roet and/or the wife of Payne de Roet, I have found nothing on her identity. The only sources for Catherine of Hainault being that person are several World Connect data bases-and they do not indicate a source. That does not mean that they are wrong.

One point in favor of a connection between the Roet's Catherine of Hainault (sister of Edward III's consort Queen Philippa) is that the Payne, Philippa, and Catherine Roet were at one time or another in Queen Philippa's household.

(Jim Phillips calls her Catherine & has different parents)

Geni
Daughter of Jean II d'Avesnes, comte de Hainaut and Phillipa, countess of Luxembourg
Wife of Payne de Roët, of Guignies
Mother of Sir Paon de Roët

Vs

1. Catherine d' AVESNES , of Hainault was born 1320 in Hainault, Belgium, and died AFT 1375 in Ghent, Hainault, Belgium. She was the daughter of 2. William III d' AVESNES , Count of Hainault and 3. Jeanne de VALOIS. She married Payne de ROET , Sir, son of Payne de ROET , of Guignies. He was born ABT 1315 in Guignies, Hainault, Belgium, and died 1380 in Ghent, Hainault, Belgium.

That's my understanding, for what it's worth. Wife of Payn Roët is unknown. Two daughters, Philippa and Katherine (mother unknown).

I would start from the assumption that if someone has found something new it would be front page news on every genealogy blog in the world.

Thanks, I thought I was missing a whole generation of historical romances.

Rachal Bhnay Davis - none of those links go to actual sources; they are web trees that give no evidence of the connection.

On the Geni profile, such links have been added as well; they are not evidence, alas.

Evidence will be primary sources (documents from the time period) or reliable secondary sources (histories or genealogies which cite the primary sources).

Anne, I think she didn’t exist. Look at her parents.

See https://www.genealogics.org/getperson.php?personID=I00012274&tree=LEO - he’s even got “ illegitimate” but no Catherine’s.
