We know that Sarah Royce was born in October 1665 in Norwich, Connecticut, and that in September 1682 she and Samuel Lincoln of Taunton were convicted of "fornication before marriage". And their daughter Lydia Lincoln was presumably born in late 1682 or early 1683. HOWEVER, do we know that they were actually ever married? Could they have gone their separate ways, making Sarah Royce available to be married to John Chapman about 1684?

Most troubling to me, the only thing that would argue against her marriage to John Chapman is the often quoted date that Sarah died on November 3, 1688, Norwich, Connecticut. But I have been unable to find any source that she (or anyone else) died anywhere in Connecticut on November 3, 1688. Does anyone know where that date came from, and what surname was given for Sarah in that source?

I'm seeing this 2004 NEHGR article, summarized here:

http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Person:Sarah_Royce_%281%29

"Based on the circumstantial evidence, I conclude that the article in the Register confirms that Sarah Royce, wife of John Chapman, was the daughter of Jonathan Royce and Deborah Calkins."

However it does not claim that Sarah first married (or had daughter Lydia with) Samuel Lincoln.

We "had" put Sarah together as wife of both men, but I don't think it works?
