SmartCopy 2.0 - The World Family Tree Quality Update

Synopsis: (major points)

1) Photo upload enable is OFF by default (open Configuration Options to change).

2) Comparison (viewing) of existing Geni field values to the updating values BEFORE submitting the updates. (One can still edit the values to be updated, as before.)

3) Locations can be edited and re-parsed by the Google location lookup (while still in the SmartCopy panel).

4) Improved parsing of web-sites, particularly FamilySearch.org Record and Genealogy (person) pages. (Some of these are still obtained by enabling the “Experimental” switch in the Configuration Options.)

5) Handling ‘unknown’ relationships in some types of pages.

See the Project Description for more details!

Still on my wish list :-)
Chose from multiple photos on FaG

In this one the photo to use is the first one but often a portrait is the second or third

Perhaps I'm being overly sensitive, but after months of work and major effort, I feel slightly annoyed that the first comment is what SC 2.0 doesn't have. :/

No, you are correct. I didn't think about that sorry.
I have not used it yet because I have spent the last few days doing conflicting data resolves

I just loaded one that I had already done and compared it. It does look great

Thanks Eldon :)

are we able to turn off the Reference: MyHeritage Family Trees - SmartCopy: about me blurb?

HistoryLink (deceased) RIP..

Thanks Jeff It took me a few puzzeled cliks to find it..

Using Ancestry:
Maria Stambach has two husbands, 3 children with first, 6 with second. All 9 have the first husband as the father as a default.

Jason Scott Wills, yes - under configuration, uncheck "Add reference to Geni's About section"

Jim Wile, thanks - I'll investigate

Jim Wile, I've pushed out 2.0.1, which should fix the proper placement of children on Ancestry trees as well as identifying half-siblings.

Jeff, when updateing a profile with the exact same information in a field ie; Name "new info: Biill > Geni Data: Bill" should I uncheck that box or just leave the check? I understand if it is different or blank.

Bill, I would leave it unchecked myself since it's just unnecessary, but I believe if the values are the same, Geni just ignores it, creating no new event in the revision history.

2/10/2016 at 6:33 PM

Cool Beans, I did not want to create dups by mistake. If the profile is excatly the the same I do not update it.

I was questioning the ones that are checked by SC but no changes.

2/10/2016 at 7:10 PM

SmartCopy guesses as what might need updating, but you should make the final decision.

Since one can now compare the 'new' values to the existing Geni values, it should be a rather rare situation where one needs to create a duplicate & merge later.

2/10/2016 at 7:14 PM

I find myself, when doing an update, clearing all the check marks (using the checkbox at the 'top' by the persons name) ... then just ticking the ones I determine should be updated. (e.g.: Colonial America instead of United States pre-1776 <grin>).

Mazel Tov on 2.0!

As you might recall I had problems with SmartCopy... I couldn't get it to work.

So it seems like it works now, perhaps because I turned off ALL the Extensions except for SmartCopy. Is it a sort of spoiled child in this way... ha ha... I mean do others find that turning off Extensions helps it work better or work at all?

2/10/2016 at 7:50 PM

One more thing: Should it work completely independently of the OS?

Todd Michael Edelman, it shouldn't interfere with other extensions (though, perhaps maybe a script or popup blocker, as it uses a Geni popup to authorize the app with your account). It should work on any desktop OS (e.g. Windows, OSX, Linux). Mobile OS, such as iPhone iOS and Android do not support extensions as far as I know within the Chrome web browser.

2/10/2016 at 8:24 PM

One extension that would cause problem is one that turns off Javascript; that's what SmartCopy is written in.

2/10/2016 at 8:26 PM

I have 4 or 5 extensions which happily co-exist with SmartCopy ... both Windows 7 & OS/X.

2/10/2016 at 8:39 PM

I'm on Windows 10

2/10/2016 at 8:40 PM

It is moving faster than EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2/10/2016 at 10:25 PM

Thanks, Jeff. I have some Extensions that disable tracking and ads... they also make it impossible to watch certain videos and see Disqus comments, etc. I will experiment to see what I can Enable that doesn't mess with SmartCopy... could be just one. Will report.

2/10/2016 at 10:34 PM

Hmm... no problem now with everything on. Before I turned those off I had just deleted the cache... this was mentioned before as a possible fix.. perhaps the cache just needs more frequent deletion.

2/10/2016 at 10:40 PM

I've used it a couple times today. Smoothe like butter. Well done.

Excellent enhancements - thank you!

2/11/2016 at 7:11 AM

Private User - well done :)

Minor change - I like that the address fields are now Auto Checked for updates & we do not have to check each one any longer.

Could you also auto check the Place field for Update ?
Input = PENCRAN

Output (if place not checked) = PENCRAN, Pencran, Finistere, Brittany, France

2/11/2016 at 7:19 AM

Ooops - just noticed it's Sometimes that - "...the address fields are now Auto Checked for updates.."

Could it be done All the time ?

2/11/2016 at 8:07 AM

I'm not sure what you are seeking, Peter.

The initial selection (or not) of the location fields is done by a comparison of the Geni value to the parsed-page-then-lookup values. No need to update values which may seem to be the same.

If you re-edit the location (even if to just click the edit-pencil icon and click "Update", then SmartCopy will auto-select all the non-empty location detail fields. This behavior is based on the assumption that you are 'editing' the location to improve the values and that you intend to replace the current Geni values with them.

One additional point about being able to edit the location:

At times I find myself selecting the current Geni value (e.g.: via triple-click on the Geni Place field which had all the data stuck in the one field), then editing, pasting in that Geni value, and submitting for re-lookup. That typically will then expand into the proper detail fields ... and I click to select the (usually) now-empty Place field to blank out the redundant info.

2/11/2016 at 8:10 AM

If the location was 'red-marked', that means (usually) that the "lookup" did not happen at all. Click 'edit', click 'update' will usually fix that -- unless the text string is really, really bad.
