I don't even think of it as craziness, Michael. It was the times they lived in. I also had slave owners in my family. I've found children in my family that were sent to poorhouses because they were orphaned. Also bonded out to families that were sometimes abusive. The treatment of the Irish and Chinese was deplorable. I can't imagine loading up the kids and heading off for a picnic and the hanging in town either. It was a long time ago and attitudes and beliefs have evolved. (I AM a little concerned about the lack of branches in some parts of my tree. Explains a lot. )

Just think about the blood line of the people, it may be ever so thin but biologercal genes is there, our learned behavior hopefully is different. " we can't have one without the other" we have to live a while to confirm that.

So who was Thomas Dabinott, Sr. that warrants his mention? I looked at the profile and it has no information.

Or is it just that a white guy who's well-known who wants information about slave owners in his past covered up being directly related like this to a person who may well be descended from those same slaves?

In any event, what we have in our trees is what it is. I agree with Josie that our "learned" behavior is hopefully (and likely) different. Sometimes these undesirables in our pasts are single bad apples, too.

Obama is one of African American relationships who connects to me through love and marriage, not racism and rapey rape. Between the two types of genealogical relationship, there is some grey area, no doubt, where a black female slave lived in concubinage with a master or his sons or uncles. Sally Hemming might be an example since she was evidently important to Thomas Jefferson. Gene tests can't prove he was the Father of her children, but it is the simplest explanation, and Occam's Razor applies. Otherwise a brother or uncle is implicated in addition to the President. All US Presidents except Van Buran have a common ancestor in John Lackland, aka Bad Prince John or King John I of England. It is interesting to see some of the other multitudes of ancestors each of them may share and each of us definitely share with them.

Obama is my 12th cousin, 2x removed. And then there's Trump. Yikes! How embarrassing. But to be honest, I have at least one known link to ever one of them, many of their wives, and a lot of other American notables, because everybody does once they connect to the American Family Tree through a couple of prolific early colonial ancestors. Eventually all trees connect (going back towards prehistory) and going forwards towards the next marriage of a newcomer into the family fold. My tree is currently reaching out towards Japan, Korea, and many other countries where I have not found any ancestors yet.

Recently I found a remarkable line that connects my French Canadian Dubois cousins to the aristocratic Du Bois of Belgium. From those is descended, in a straight male line, W.E.B. Dubois, the African American activist and writer from New York. The connection to me is almost male line Du Bois. I bet President Obama would be proud to know he is related to the intellectual elite of Harlem without passing through his wife's line. I also have connections to Spike Lee, Kanye West and so forth, although Kanye West is merely a cousin by marriage. His Armenian American wife is descended from Old New England families. Heck, King Zog of Albania is connected to Old New England families through an American woman who married Euro-Trash as our European cousins are sometimes called.
