From https://books.google.com/books?lpg=PA174&dq=Richard+gray+1602&a...

P. C. C. Hudelston, 49. Richard Gray of Harwich, Essex, mariner. Will dated 28 June, 1602; proved 5 Jan., 1602. Mentions brother John Gray "land coming to me from my father in Harwich;" wife Josnam land given him by his father Thomas Gray, deceased in Church lane, also in Dover court and Hamsey. Com. Essex and Herts.

=====

I would think this Thomas is of the Gray / mariners of Harwich. But not the Richard who died 1602 and named no children. His brother John??

Moved John Gray of Harwich, father of John Gray of Stapleford Tawney, to son of Thomas Gray of Harwich (and therefore, the brother mentioned in the 1602 will).

I had found this Essex family among a nobler bunch in Northumberland ..?

Yes, there were cousins, and that was about as far as I got. The lines should be in NEHGS or other well known resources for such a prominent colonial family, but just didn't have time to finish sorting it out. I know that the old Lord Grey owned land in Harwich, and I believe I read somewhere that his son retired to that property. I'll be interested to see what turns up.

Thank you, it's a relief to think we're on the right track. I have more sorting out to do in these couple of generations and then will try and cycle back to Harwich, and back to ... Devon?

Just leaving here for reference.

According to http://thelivesofmyancestors.wordpress.com/2014/03/10/thomas-grey-o...

Who apparently descends from Richard Gray, of Stapleford Tawney & Stansted Mountfichet

This Gray line is of the Grays of Heaton originally

More modern descent:

I believe the Uncle Alexander Gray who sent his nephews off to the Plymouth Colony may be found here.

Well - according to http://www.basilgray.com/ch6.htm

The father of John Gray of Stapleford Tawney (the father of the American immigrants Edward & Thomas Gray)

Was not

John Gray of Harwich

Was not

Sir Ralph Grey of Chillingham (as reported by http://www.tudorplace.com.ar/GREY8.htm#John%20GREY%20of%20Tawney1)

But was

Alexander Graye, died 1600, son of John Graye II & Mary Perkins

Which would account for the "uncle Alex" stories as he had a son, Alexander ll.
