William Owen "Bill" Irwin Going to be a tough one. Nothing on his family that I could find except one sister who is his only sibling. If you can find a birth certificate you will have his parents. There are 5 Focus names in the Bohemian Cemetery in Omaha and 2 in Fort McPherson National Cemetery. They could be his parents. He was unmarried.

You should edit his profile. Private First Class is not a suffix and should be removed. Cause of death is killed in action,and Vietnam is already shown as the location. I would suggest that his display name should read "Pfc James William Focus Medal of Honor."

"Help! I was working on Geni, when all of a sudden everything went to Italian (I think, since I don't speak/ read it, I'm just guessing). I'm trying to find where to set preferences, but since everything is in this other language, I'm having problems. I can't even message someone, because it's in Italian, and so will their reply, if I get one.

I went to my profile page and found a box that said English default, but it's obviously not."

Since she is unable to read any messages from Geni from what she says, you can send me a message at my home email (pscoggin@cox.net) which I can then forward to her if you can't get thru to her here in Geni.

Patricia Tammy can find English at the bottom of the page where there's a grouping of links on the left & facebook & Twitter on the right. The language link is furthest to the right in the left group.

Thanks, everyone, I finally got it figured out. What caused it to switch languages on me while I was working on profile updates is a mystery to me, but when you can't read the language, it's not easy to find the correct page, etc. to fix the problem. At least not for me! I kept trying different things and found the right page etc. to do the correction.

The next time, - scroll to the bottom, - the gray language selection line is never translated.

Yes, you can split the tree! It doesn't require a curator to do this, though I can quite understand why Geni doesn't want all of us to figure out how to do it. It takes some time to do it without damage to the "other" bit of the tree, but it can be done. Here's how.

(a) Make sure you are a manager of both John Howards, i.e. duplicate them.
(b) adjust dates for each profile;
(c) assign children to the respective John Howards and their wife/wives; otherwise they will probably end up with one parent and an unknown;
(d) go to your ancestor. Open his profile. (If you just go to "edit, it will refuse to split the tree). Then press "edit profile", and then "relationships". There are boxes down below where you can remove relationships. Tick on "remove" for the wrong set of parents and the wrong wives. You will still get a warning in red letters, implying Armageddon, that you are going to split the tree. But that's what you want to do. If you've taken precautions that neither part of the tree will suffer, it's fine Just press "save and close"

I have accidentally joined Josef Rajchl as the children of Private and Private. But in fact Josef Rajchl is her great-great-.....grandfather. Can zou please remove this relationship?

Take your time, Bill, nice & slow. It's a wonderful tool that takes practice. If you get it wrong and the children spin off somehow, use drag & drop to haul them into position again.

Be sure and re order the children also: Geni doesn't do it automatically, and once they are out of order, it's harder to spot possible problems, like "time traveling profiles.".

And also, please resolve data conflicts as you go along, while the genealogy / source is in front of you. Much harder to do it correctly a year later ...

Hi everyone sorry I was out of the office and not able to respond to the inquiries a few days ago about the requested merges. You are correct that this was an unfortunate side-effect of a process we're running that enables curators to merge isolated trees into the big tree, if there's a suitable match. This process helps everyone and the response has been overwhelmingly positive, in part because it allows a user to get into the big tree without having to pay for a Pro account to see the match / request the merge. The process of reviewing the matches was intended for curators, whom we've cautioned to scrutinize these extra thoroughly. Do not blame Terry for her comment, we did not spend enough time explaining this side-effect to the curators.

As of today we've released some fixes that should remove these matches from your merge center and remove the false implication that the merge was requested by a Geni user, instead clearly indicating that the match was made by the Geni system and requires extra scrutiny. If you have additional questions or concerns, please send me a PM so this thread can get back to curators assisting users.

Martin, the spelling serves as a way to mark off the purely-Scots rulers from the ones who ruled Scotland AND England. (There's also a language issue - the French prefer the spelling "Stuart" regardless, probably because it's easier for them to figure out how to pronounce it.)
