I've had an interesting question from: Dewald Nel

Dear Sharon

I see that you have done a family tree for Field Marshall Jan Smuts.

Do you perhaps know or even have contact with the closest living relatives of Jan Smuts?

I'm trying to get hold of them to see whether they know anything about correspondence sent between Jan Smuts and Prince Friedrich Fuerst zu Solms-Baruth.

Prince Solms-Baruth had connection with the plot to assassinate Hitler during WWII and as a result his properties in Germany were seized.

The family is now trying to claim these properties back and it appears that the correspondence between the Prince and Jan Smuts may be relevant in this claim.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards
Dewald

Hi @Sharon Doubell I am sure that the staff at Smuts House in Irene will be able to assist

Yes, I suggested that too. He says that they've yet to reply to him; and that from his research, Jan Smuts' correspondence was all sent to the National Archives in Pretoria.

This appears to be the only direct grandchild who has ever been on Geni as a user, - http://www.geni.com/people/Lt-Colonel-Peter-Mincher/600000000796779...#
(Lt Colonel Peter Mincher → Kathleen Mincher (Smuts) his mother → Jan Christian Smuts, Field Marshal her father) but he was last on 2011 - So a message to him is a long shot.

Peter's closest Geni user is Hilliary Catt - might be able to help.

I'll add an alert on the Geni SA FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/243811932355680/

Ian Bowes on the Geni SA FB suggests you post here too, Dewald:
