I have had Sarah Coley Baldwin in my tree for several years: She is my 9th great grandmother. Yet her sister is my 10 great grand aunt according to Geni.com. That doesn't make sense. She is my 9th great grand aunt. If there is a way to correct the path so that Geni.com shows Abilene as my 9th gr grand aunt and her husband's and my 9th gr grand uncles?
Thank you!
Sharon Vik
Hi Sharon
That was very helpful - for someone else. :).
You're still showing as 10th great niece
http://www.geni.com/path/Abilenah+Abilene+Chapin+Cooley+is+related+...
Can you "step through" each of the links in that path and examine for tree conflicts, extra spouses, etc.?
I will also post fhe Sarah Baldwin path in case there's an issue on that side.
http://www.geni.com/path/Sharon+Lynn+Vik+is+related+to+Sarah+Baldwi...
She's still your 9th great grandmother.
So - let's compare the statements & see if there are discrepancies.
I did "refresh" the path and ask it to recalculate after I moved over the wrong husband, so that wasn't the problem ....
I'm now testing using your cousin Fay Elizabeth Baldwin
Peter Coley is Fay Elizabeth Baldwin's 8th great uncle!
http://www.geni.com/path/Fay+Elizabeth+Baldwin+is+related+to+Peter+...
Sarah Baldwin (Coley) is Fay Elizabeth Baldwin's 7th great grandmother
http://www.geni.com/path/Fay+Elizabeth+Baldwin+is+related+to+Sarah+...
Yup - this is just ... bizarre. I see nothing wrong.
OK - I think this might be a general "terminology change" in Geni -- and one I find odd too.
I just tested with my own 8th great grandmother - it's a sedate line, no recent merges
Abigail Reade
Abigail Reade (Rice) is your 8th great grandmother
Paul Rice
Paul Rice is your 9th great uncle.
Elizabeth Billings
Elizabeth Lamson (Rice) is your 9th great aunt.
[54] is this a change in the Geni program?
sorry was trying to tag Mike Stangel - the names of relationships have changed. My 8th great grandmother's brother shows as 9th great uncle instead of 8th great uncle.
I tested using the http://www.geni.com/projects/HistoryLink/14021 application and the (confusing) terminology change reflected there as well.

CC. Baldwin says Sarah (Coley) Baldwin was dau. of BENJAMIN COLEY...
Same situation here....Sarah (Coley) Baldwin is my 7th great grandmother, BUT her sister Abilene/Abelenah is my 8th great aunt...and the other siblins are also 8th.
I have no particular knowledge of the Coley family beyond the association with Baldwin....and the change to a different father (Benjamin Coley) would not account for the discrepancy....
I will notify the Curator (or maybe Erica can take care) of the error on death.....she died 1711, not 1710....she was aged 68.
The only other thing that MAY account for it (tho not likely) is that CC notes that Boltwood's "History of Hadley" had Sarah Coley as 2nd wife, with a first of Elizabeth ---...and Elizabeth mother of some of the children, with Sarah the mother of Samuel and the last Hannah.....
This is the only thing that contradicts the info that is now showing on Geni (besides the father of Sarah).

A DIFFERENT: SARAH COOLEY, Cooley, who married Wetmore Baldwin....of Granville, Mass.
Sarah Coley vs Sarah Cooley....2 different people.
You may note that the person who did the memorial on Japhat/Japhet Chapin is a Barbara Chapin....
Perhaps contacting her (if possible) may shed some light on this situation, in regards to whether Abilene is truly sister of the Sarah Coley who married Joseph Baldwin Jr. or is she from the Cooley family....
Sarah Baldwin (Coley)
Father should be: Benjamin Coley per Baldwin Geneology:
https://archive.org/stream/baldwingenealogy00bald#page/482/mode/2up
Sarah Baldwin (Cooley)
Married to Wetmore Baldwin has different parents.
I have added the line back to the Cooley family immigrants for her.

Erica Howton and Fay Elizabeth Baldwin we did not change anything here. I'm confused, though -- haven't we always called your 8th great grandparent's sister your 9th great aunt? What were you expecting / what did you see before?
I'm finding it confusing that persons on the same generational level would have a different number of relationship steps to me, but I don't have the correct answer and Mr Google is serving me up "fun calculators" instead of math charts.

Faye - for the tree corrections needed would you be able to mail the curators involved for their action?
Fay - Baldwin & Savage differ on the father of the Sarah Coley who married Joseph Baldwin.

About "I'm finding it confusing that persons on the same generational level would have a different number of relationship steps to me":
It can be totally normal.
I have yet to walk through your tree in more détails, but just for the sake of discussion, here is an example applying to me:
I have an ancestor, Louise Gagné, who is related to me via three branches:
* Branch 1 : Mario > f > f > m > f > f > m > f > m > m > Louise
* Branch 2 : Mario > f > f > m > f > m > f > f > f > m > Louise
* Branch 3 : Mario > f > f > m > m > m > f > m > m > Louise
(f=father; m=mother)
(source: http://www.geni.com/projects/Mes-Pionniers-%C3%89dition-Mario-Morel...)
With branches 1 and 2, Louise is my 7th great grandmother.
With branch 3, she is my 6th great grandmother.
When there are many branches that connect one accestor to an individual, this means that there has been marriages between cousins (of whichever degree).
After I dug further, I found that branches 1 and 2 show that my 2nd great grandparents were 4rd cousins.
And branches 2 and 3 show that my great grandfather married his 4th cousin once removed.
Now, in a tree like that, there will be all sorts of combinations between generation levels and relationship steps with your great uncles, great aunt, great parents etc.
When Geni shows you the relationship path in the "yellow" area, then Geni has to pick one of the many branches. And I believe that the algorythm that Geni uses to pick which one is not quite yet optimized. I have seen very bizzare and funny scenarios where I had two ancestors, one the child of the other, yet both were my 9th great grandfathers, according to Geni.
So, don't worry. I don't think there is anything wrong with your data. It is just that among the different branches you are studying, there are marriages between remote cousins. (Something that is very common throughout the Big Tree.)
Just to expand on my 6:02 pm post, about the funny behaviour of Geni in selecting a branch among interconnected branches.
When you find a section of your tree with interconnected branches, just start with your profile and walk up the tree following one of such branch. When you get to the interconnected parts (that is, the part of your tree where many branches lead to the same people), just observe very carefully the relationship path that Geni gives you in the yellow area.
You will see that, sometime, the path changes completely. In one extreme case of this, as I was walking up my tree on my father side, suddently, I found myself on my mother side.
The joy of genealogy.
