William d'Aubigny, 3rd Earl of Arundel - Additional career details

A Crusader, he was a favorite of, and loyal to, King John and witnessed King John's concession of the Kingdom to Pope Innocent III on May 15, 1213. He also accompanied to and supported King John at Runnymead June 15, 1215. (His namesake, William d'Aubigny, Baron of Belvoir, was a Magna Carta Surety.) When King John abandoned Winchester, June 14, 1216 to Louis (VIII) of France he joined Louis but then returned to his allegiance July 14, 1217 after the Royalist victory at Lincoln. His forfeited possessions were returned and he became Justiciar. He was in the crusade of 1218 and was at the taking of Damietta in November 1219.

William d'Aubigny, 3rd Earl of Arundel succeeded to the title of Earl of Sussex on 24 December 1193.1 He succeeded to the title of 3rd Earl of Arundel [E., c. 1138] on 24 December 1193.1 On 15 May 1213 he witnessed the concession by King John of the Kingdom to the Pope.1 On 14 June 1216 he joined Prince Louis (later Louis VIII of France) after King John abandoned Winchester.2 On 14 July 1217 he returned to King John's allegiance after the Royalist victory at Lincoln (consistently taking the winning side).2 He held the office of Justiciar [England] after 1217.2 In 1218 he embarked on the Crusade of that year.1 He died before 30 March 1221 in Caneill, Italy. News of his death reached England on this date.2 He was buried in Wymondham Priory, Norfolk, England.2
