Curators,

I believe someone, has merged two legitimate independent profiles (first cousins) for Josiah Davisson in error and the relationship tab appears to be disabled so I am not sure how to fix this. Can you please help?

See:
http://www.geni.com/family-tree/index/6000000003868175097

The two Josiah first cousins are:

Josiah-5, born 10/04/1767, (son of Amaziah-4, Josiah-3, Daniel-2, Daniel-1) Davisson married to Amy (daughter of Benjamin Shinn and Ann Reese)

For reference, these are intact:
Josiah (Short Si) Davisson...
Amy Davisson

Josiah-5, born circa 1765-1768 (Son of Andrew-4, Josiah-3, Daniel-2, Daniel-1) Davisson married to Lucretia [Ann], (daughter of Benjamin Shinn and Ann Reese)

For reference, these are intact:
Josiah (Long Si) Davisson
Lucretia ‘Annie’ Davisson

I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you, Jonathan Evans

As suggested I have moved this to the "ATTENTION Curators, please assist" public discussion. Please respond there.

I've noticed that quite few managers have placed reference codes in the suffix field of profiles. Apert from this looking very untidy, I wondered whether it had any effect on the searching/matchng process.

Without wishing to personalise this, this question would incomplete without an example profile: http://www.geni.com/profile/edit_basics/6000000000187592801

That's a question for South African curators as this is the de Villiers / Pama system used in SA genealogy.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genealogical_numbering_systems#de_Vill...

The example given is SA curator Judi's mother
Private

The reference code doesn't affect seaching and it does aid by confirming identity when merging profiles... I agree it looks untidy, especially when the number gets long, and we have recently started limiting the number to the last 2 generations....

I notice Judi also adds a 4 or 5... this is NOT according to our Guidelines.. see:
http://www.geni.com/projects/South-Africa-Profile-Guidelines/16231

I will invite Judi to comment...

It has no affect at all on recognising the correct merge.. To say the least it limits wrong or incorrect merges, as in the South African name giving pattern it happened and still happens that a lot of people with the same names and surnames marries and they are not vaguely the same person.
That is why the full Genealogical code of conduct is to add the Villiers/Pama codes.
I have asked Geni staff and in particular Hiromimarie and she assured me that I have the right to do the profiles of my family and anyother user have the same rights to do it the way they prefer.
We as curators have no right to tell people what to do. We can oly give guidelines that we prefer, but can't force it on other users.

I must admit Donovan that I did start changing to the limitations but it makes it extremely difficult to find a correct line in the tree. Try and find a simple example like, Johannes Petrus Swanepoel, up the tree, without the full de Villiers/Pama reference and see how long it takes.
I don't want an arquement on this, but feel I have the right to "verdedig" myself here.
I am the 5th person with the same names in a line. Don I have started taking it out and just left the de Villiers/Pama reference.
I do hope it is taken in the good way I am stating it.
Judi

Well I agree it looks a little untidy and confusing... I have seen this on some profiles and wondered what those weird numbers are. I can see it all makes sense in a table of descendants. Although I have used a similar system in private I dont use it here.. In private I prefer to use the Sosa-Stradonitz Method for my ancestors, and then each descendants of my ancestors get a unique code by beginning with my ancestors number.. then letter A if the child is the oldest (And then switching numbers and letters for each generation), but this is only for my personal use..

By the way, I have no problem with someone using this here, but I doubt theres many who understands what it is?

NO how have me curious. What is the Sosa-Stradonitz system.
I presume that is the South African equal?
Just in short what happened before we used it.
My husband ended married to mom JSH, myself JSH to dad and my husband to our daughter just J.
My husband is Johan(Jan), my son is Johan both Meyer. My brother is Jan, my gradfather was Jan and about 50 cousins called Jan. All with the same names Jan Johannes Marais. And wolla came my father in law as Jan Petrus M, a few cousins called Jan Petrus and it really gave a big mess up, many years ago with 1 incorrect merge.
I am happy to only use it in my PAF but don't feel like always having to untangled aal the incorrect Susanna, Johanna, Pieter, Johannes, etc. etc. here.
Can all see the SA dilemma. Laughable indeed. BUT I am very proud I must sat to be the 4th in line with those names.
Have a lovely productive day.

Ahnentafel (Sosa-Stradonitz Method)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ahnentafel

I understand that problem, I have a family where five of the children had the same name, birthdates should have been enough but if the dates are close it doesnt always help.. I use roman letters: I, II, III, IV, V in suffix to difference between them.. In my experience the Sosa-Stradonitz system for ancestors is probably the most used in genealogy...

David you are correct indeed.
Thank you Drevis for the explanation of the Sosa-Stradonitz-Method.
I read it now and it is about the same just with no's instead of letters.I know the term Ahnentafel as we use that to explain the de Villiers as well..
Never a dull moment in Genealogy.

please undo the merge on this profile

Many South Africans and many curators are in support of keeping a local numbering system out of the Naming Fields on the World Tree. We had compromised with those suggesting it helped merges, by asking that only the last 2 numbers be placed in the Suffix Field, but there has been a recent push from the supporters of Full Numbers in the Suffix Field (up to 20 nos!) to do away with that compromise.

Well, if there is a vote on the subject, I would suggest that the suffix field should NOT be used for anything other than internationally recognised suffixes. South African profiles are not any different to migrants in other counties, why should they be treated any differently. If the is a general need for an 'indexing' field then why not provide one that everyone can use?

Agreed. We've asked Geni for an Indexing field too.
